About the Position: West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.

Duties

Help
  • Serve as the first layer of defense in a security-in-depth concept to deter, detect, delay, assess, respond, and document unauthorized access to Army installations restricted to the general public.
  • Preserve the life, health, and safety of government personnel.
  • Safeguard Army property and technologies against such threats as unlawful entry, sabotage, espionage, theft, accidental or willful damage, and destruction on installations.
  • Support the overall installation Antiterrorism/Force Protection capability by providing emergency base closure, active shooter response, and physical security emergency response to all hazard's disasters.
  • Authenticate identification through use of electronic Personnel Access Control Systems (ePACS), identification cards, badges, biometric automated records, verbal questioning, and other means.
  • Exercise crowd control, implement contingency plans, and execute crowd control in situations that may become violent or unruly as a result of planned or impromptu demonstrations.
  • Operate and perform research queries on the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) workstation terminal(s) in accordance with (IAW) Federal and state laws.
  • Regulate pedestrian and vehicular traffic to prevent accidents and to ease congestion and parking problems.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • The incumbent must undergo and pass pre-employment and annual medical exams of physical, emotional, and mental stability.
  • The incumbent will be required to maintain physical conditioning and pass an annual physical agility test (PAT).
  • The incumbent must be assigned for mandatory drug testing and must agree to submit to a urinalysis on a recurring basis in accordance with Army Regulation 600-85.
  • Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, natural disasters and other emergency situations as directed.
  • Position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban (the Lautenberg Amendment). This act bans individuals convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence and certain others from possession or access to firearms or ammunition.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime and may be subject to recall for periods of emergency overtime.
  • This position requires certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation with Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training.
  • The incumbent must wear the Department of the Army Security Guard (DASG) uniform in accordance with Army Regulation 190-56, maintaining a high state of appearance and hygiene.
  • The incumbent must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify semi-annually thereafter in the use of assigned firearms/weapons.
  • The incumbent may be required to wear chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment, and may be required to be certified in the use of aerosol irritants and baton.
  • In accordance with Army Regulation 190-56, requirements of Individual Reliability Program apply.
  • The incumbent must be able to obtain and sustain state certification for operating the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) terminals.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles. Incumbent must be fully qualified to operate a government vehicle.
  • The incumbent must successfully complete security guard training.
  • The incumbent must obtain and maintain applicable certifications in operating various electronic equipment and sensors.
  • The incumbent must be able to perform as a member of the installation's overall security response capability requiring the incumbent to carry and deploy a riot baton, carry a protective shield and employ non-lethal ammunitions if necessary.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience, which includes: 1) Working with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; OR 2) Maintaining order and protecting life. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis. For Security Guard positions in a hospital setting, experience as a psychiatric nursing assistant or a similar position safeguarding patients is qualifying.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
