Duties

Help
  • You will serve as a Carpenter, with the U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii, Directorate of Public Works, Operations and Maintenance Division.
  • You will apply the full range of carpentry skills and techniques in repairing, constructing, remodeling, and maintaining a variety of wooden structures.
  • You will perform painting and other maintenance duties on buildings and structures.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and keep current a valid state driver's license and any installation and/or DOD requirement for the type vehicle being operated.
  • Employee is subject to be called back to work during non-duty hours to respond to emergencies and make repairs. Employee will have his/her name on a call out roster and will provide their phone number for the roster.
  • Assures that environmental, safety and housekeeping rules are followed.
  • Incumbent must pass a pre-employment and recurring annual physical examination.
  • Mission Essential: Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations and may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends.
  • This position requires 10% temporary duty travel (TDY).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Carpenter ~ without more than normal supervision; utilized sketches and diagrams to install pre-planned framing and partitions of wood or fabricated material. I have used patterns, spacing and techniques for nailing, fastening, bracing, splicing and clearing and standard joints and grooves. I have used shop arithmetic to fit and measure boards or sheets of material. I have used templates, precut or preplanned materials, determining the proper pattern, spacing and techniques. - - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions and where parts of the system are in hard-to-reach places. Frequently lifts and carries items that weigh up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift or move heavier items with assistance of lifting devices or another worker. Work is frequently done from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposure to moderate and high noise levels, sawdust, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment when performing work in the shop area. Exposure to weather conditions and hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders. Subject to cuts, bruises and contusions. May be exposed to confined, dusty, dirty crawl spaces and attics. Required to wear protective devices such as but not limited to ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, hard hats, and safety steel toe shoes. Wears long trousers or coveralls and shirt or tee shirt with sleeves.
