Duties

Help
  • Operate a variety of engineer heavy equipment in the construction and maintenance of roads and land management.
  • Operate a variety of roads, grounds and refuse equipment including dump trucks, water distributors, street sweepers and industrial and farm tractors.
  • Excavate, backfill, clear brush and maintain landfills utilizing a bulldozer.
  • Operate a grader with articulated steering to grade roads and parking lots.
  • Load dump trucks and perform trenching and excavating utilizing front end-loader and backhoe.

  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with class A endorsement without restrictions. NOTE: YOU MUST ATTACH A COPY OF YOUR CDL DRIVER'S LICENSE TO YOUR APPLICATION.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • This position has a requirement to lift 45 lbs. and over in th regular performance of duties.
  • This position may require the incumbent to be on call to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays or special situations.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening and random testing thereafter to to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties which include: 1) Operating a variety of engineer heavy equipment in the construction and maintenance of roads and in land management tasks; AND 2) Performing a variety of road and land management tasks such as: pouring and finishing concrete, working with hot and cold asphalt, stripping streets and parking lots, and sealing cracks in streets and parking lots. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT
Heavy physical effort is used by the operator in constantly reaching, bending, turning and moving hands, arms, feet and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the large pieces of equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Because of the location of some of the controls and attachments, the operator is frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Works outside in all types of weather in an open driver's seat or enclosed cab (most of which are not equipped with heating equipment) on slopes, grades and rolling surfaces. Subject to noise, dust, vibration, dirt and fumes from motor and exhaust. Subject to danger of injury as a result of equipment overturning. Subject to danger of cuts from equipment when changing assignments.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
