The Durham VAMC is a 274-bed tertiary care referral, teaching and research facility affiliated with Duke University School of Medicine.
Summary
This position serves as an Electrician and is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veteran's Health Administration (VHA), Mid Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Durham VA Medical Center (DVAMC), in Durham, North Carolina, located in the Electrical Section of Facilities Management Service (FMS). The Durham VAMC is a 274-bed tertiary care referral, teaching and research facility affiliated with Duke University School of Medicine.
The electrician is responsible for a diverse range of journeyman electrician duties, including the installation, modification, repair, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and testing of complex electrical systems, circuits, equipment, appliances, controls, components, lighting fixtures, and fire alarm systems.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Installs, modifies, repairs, and troubleshoots electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls distribution lines and circuits used to supply a wide range of voltage, amperage, phase, and frequency requirements, distribution panels, switchgear, power and control circuits, electrical warning, intrusion, detection, burglar alarm, fire alarm system, high intensity lighting system, high voltage system (15 KV), which includes splicing, terminating, and cable integrity, street lighting, motor generator sets, air conditioning induction motors, elevators, capacitors, DC motors, cable television, and air circuit breakers involving all the fundamental operations relevant to such work.
Determines installations and repairs including such things as the types, sizes, gauges, and layout of conduit, wiring, couplings, fittings, relays, controls, and distribution panels, and other electrical devices used in a variety of complete electrical systems and the best methods of installation and repair.
Responsible for safe and proper operation of systems and equipment, and for compliance with the National Electrical Code.
Completes installations, modifications and repairs; and loads and tests systems, circuits, equipment, and controls with little or no check during the progress or upon completion of work
Determines the type and gauge of wire, raceway fittings, hangers, protective devices, controls, etc., by referring to engineering drawings, equipment manuals, and name plate data.
Works with other trades in the performance of their related duties.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD06095A and PD06479A Physical Requirements: Works inside and outside of the Durham VA Medical Center. Work is usually dirty, dusty, hot, cold, greasy, and noisy, and is sometimes performed during inclement weather. Occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shock, burns, and is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, requiring considerable standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and kneeling; works in tiring and uncomfortable positions; frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools and equipment. Lifts and/or carry 75 pounds.
