Help

Duties include but are not limited to:

      • Performing patient history and physical examination.
      • Ordering radiological examinations (e.g. plain-film radiographs, MRI) and laboratory tests (e.g., Vitamin D)
      • Chiropractors provide management of spine and musculoskeletal conditions. This may include a combination of advice/education, exercise prescription, nutrition advice, physical modalities, equipment prescription, acupuncture/dry needling, and manual therapy approaches. Manual therapy techniques are applied specific to patient needs and preferences, and may include high-velocity, low-amplitude "thrust" joint manipulation, joint mobilization, instrument or table-assisted manipulation techniques, and manual or instrument assisted soft tissue therapies such as proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation or myofascial release.
      • Making referrals to other clinicians, primary care providers, PM&R physicians, chemical dependency physicians, pain management physicians, psychologists, and other specialists as appropriate.
      • Acupuncture and/or dry needling can only be performed if appropriately trained and hospital privileges granted.
      • Ensure practice-based learning and improvement, chiropractors are expected to be able to use scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care.
      • Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team.
      • Demonstrate behaviors that reflect a commitment to continuous professional development, ethical practice, and understanding and sensitivity to diversity, and a responsible attitude toward their patients, their profession.
      • Show effectiveness in teaching, monitor and coordinate educational activities, and comply with necessary trainee supervision.
      • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Chiropractor Basic Requirements:

  • The individual must be a graduate of a chiropractic college accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education or its successor. For acupuncture/dry needling, the chiropractor must complete requisite training in accordance with their state or district license.
  • A current, active, valid, and unrestricted license to practice chiropractic in a U.S. State, District of Columbia, Commonwealth, territory, or jurisdiction is required. For acupuncture/dry needling, must maintain current, active, valid and unrestricted appropriate endorsement from state or district of licensure.
  • To qualify for clinical privileges, must document services for at least 100 patients during the past 24 months.
  • Optional credentials include postgraduate credits approved or accredited by an appropriate State licensing board, recognized diplomate status, formal hospital staff privileges (or evidence of actively seeking hospital privileges) at a nationally accredited health care facility.
Preferred Experience:
  • Graduate of a Council of Chiropractic Education accredited postgraduate chiropractic residency

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-14. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-11 to GS-14.

Note: Only education or degrees recognized by the United States schools or colleges of chiropractic listed as accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education, at http://www.cce-usa.org/, or equivalent agency, in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed are eligible. Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

It is considered the most complex VA healthcare system nationwide. VAPSHCS has Emergency services and a full complement of specialty medical, surgical, psychiatric, critical care, and rehabilitation service-lines. VAPSHCS houses two Community Living Centers, a Spinal Cord Injury Unit, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Blind Rehabilitation, Domiciliary, and Home-Based Primary Care Services.
