The Recreation Therapist is aligned under the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service within the San Diego VA Healthcare System. Help

Major duties to include but not limited to:

  • Performs evaluations appropriate to the patient's functional, physical and/or psycho-social status to establish a baseline level of functioning as it relates to biopsychosocial engagement in leisure and recreation.
  • Administers and interprets recognized assessments as well as adapting assessments to a specialized population to determine baseline level of functioning and treatment applications which will enable patients to achieve valued outcomes and documents results.
  • Develops and carries out RT treatment plans with individuals and/or groups of patients to meet individual rehabilitation objectives within treatment in accordance with age specific standards and presenting diagnosis.
  • Monitors patient's response to program, summarizes and analyzes patient's performance, and modifies program and goals when necessary to meet patient's needs as situations and performance changes in order to attain projected functional outcomes and consults with ward team members regarding progress and changing needs.
  • Has primary responsibility for planning, revising and implementing patient treatment plans based upon initial and interim evaluations.
  • Documents patients progress in accordance with established policies.
  • Provides appropriate adaptive training/education and/or adaption of leisure/recreational as needed to support engagement per treatment goals.
  • Adapts activities and environment to improve patients' function, safety and symptom presentation.
  • Educates patients, caregivers and other staff in purposes and procedures for adaptations and safety.
  • Attends and actively participates in conferences, rounds, etc. as part of an inter-disciplinary team.
  • Maintains clinic area and equipment in a safe and orderly manner in accordance with safety and infection control policies, JCAHO/CARF regulations and other relevant regulatory policies.
  • May supervise Recreation Specialists, Recreational Therapy students, VA Compensated Workers, VA volunteers, and contracted vendors.
  • Performs chart reviews, and performs quality assurance tasks as assigned
  • Responsible for carrying out other job related activities, and special assignments, as requested by the occupational therapy supervisor.
  • Provides and attends in-services related to clinical assignment.
  • Participates in PMRS staff meetings, PM&RS in-services, etc.
  • Meets all mandatory VASDHS training requirements
  • Adheres to patient safety standards and infection control methods
  • Ensures all clinical activities are consistent with his/her privileges
  • Maintains personal productivity and assists the section in maintaining/ increasing effectiveness and efficiency in meeting its objectives.
  • May occasionally perform the duties of the Recreation Therapist (Program Coordinator) as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Recreation Therapists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403(f).
  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree or higher, from an accredited college or university, with a major in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure, with an option and/or emphasis in therapeutic recreation. The degree must be approved by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); OR,
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in any field from an accredited college or university and must be a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS). The degree must be approved by the NCTRC. If hired under this education, the certification cannot be waived.
  • Certification: Applicants must be certified in recreation therapy as a CTRS by the NCTRC.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA as a recreation therapist, on the effective date of this qualification standard, are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series, and grade held, including positive education, and registration and/or certification that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed, the following provisions apply:
  1. Such employees may be reassigned, promoted up to, and including, the full performance (journeyman) level, or changed to lower grade within the occupation, but may not be promoted beyond the journeyman level, or placed in supervisory or managerial positions.
  2. Employees who were appointed on a temporary basis, prior to the effective date of the qualification standard, may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis, until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard.
  3. Employees initially grandfathered into this occupation, who subsequently obtain additional education and/or licensure/registration/certification, that meet all the basic requirements of this qualification standard must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupation.
  4. Recreation and creative arts therapists who are converted to title 38 hybrid status under this provision and subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements, in effect at the time of reentry, as a recreation therapist.

Grade Determinations:

Recreation Therapist, GS-12

Experience: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, completion of two years of progressively complex experience, which includes one year equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-11) directly related to the position being filled.

Certification:
Additional certification in a specialty treatment area in recreation therapy, such as, but not limited to: Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation, Geriatrics, Developmental Disabilities, Behavioral Health, Community Inclusion Services, Aquatic Exercise Therapy/Aquatic Therapy, Adapted Sports, Assisted Technology, Social Skills, etc., or in a directly related field such as, but not limited to: acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, dementia, dialectical behavioral therapy, gambling disorder, motivational interviewing, and/or wellness recovery action plan facilitator.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
  1. Knowledge of best practice and evidence-based recreation therapy across 10 multiple areas of practice.
  2. Ability to perform clinical services and balance organizational responsibilities while developing and implementing effective strategies with great autonomy, at a level compatible with the critical necessity for accuracy and completion.
  3. Ability to adapt assessment tools and treatment to the complexity of the diagnosis or disability and demonstrate the clinical reasoning necessary to identify the need for further in- depth specific assessment.
  4. Skill in developing, implementing, and modifying recreation therapy treatment plans in response to changing medical, physical, mental, psychological and/or psychosocial conditions, as well as comorbidities.
  5. Ability to provide clinical guidance using the advanced knowledge of best practice and evidence-based recreation therapy implementation across multiple areas of practice.
  6. Knowledge of how recreation therapy impacts revenue resource allocation, as it relates to complex diagnosis, treatment, and diagnostic coding.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
