This position is assigned to the Paint Shop located in the Facility Management Service at the VANJ Health Care System. The work consists of applying and installing a variety of paints, coatings and coverings to new and existing surfaces throughout the Medical Center. Work is accomplished by using standard trade methods and techniques to ensure surfaces are fully coated, covered and protected correctly.
Summary

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
Determines the methods, techniques, devices and materials that are best suited to achieve the desired finish.
Applies accepted methods and techniques, and ensures that smoothness level and shaping requirements are met. This is done by washing walls, floors, ceilings or woodwork, cuts out cracks, spackle and sands the area smooth.
Prepares surfaces by scraping, sanding, washing, wire-brushing, taping, spackling, and caulking.
Mixes and matches all paint required for the completion of the assigned job.
Prepares and applies decorative and protective coverings and coating such as stains, varnishes, shellac, etc.
Prepares doors for refinishing.
Assembles material which consists of drop cloths, ladders, extension planks, fire extinguishers, no smoking signs, paints, etc. and transports them to the site of the job.
Constructs, remodels, repairs and installs signs.
Cuts and installs glass or Plexiglas in window sashes; replaces broken glass in x-ray view boxes, doors, bookcases and cabinets.
Operates and maintains the traffic line painting machine when lying and painting traffic control lines on roadways and in parking lots.

Subject to sustained physical effort in cleaning, scrapping, sanding and painting of ceilings, walls and floors. The painter performs work inside and outside.
