Duties

Help
  • Serve as a Fire Protection Inspector at Aberdeen Proving Ground, which is a large installation with a high degree of fire severity and expectancy.
  • Performs weekly fire inspections of areas having a high fire expectancy.
  • Inspection sites include high hazard facilities (shops, warehouses, offices, living quarters, medical facilities, labs, airfields, computer labs, etc.) and where flammable/combustible materials are stored/used, or where hazardous ops are conducted.
  • Conducts education programs on the prevention, detection and suppression of fires to both the local and installation community. Target audience range from adults to school age children.
  • Develop materials, and provide situational and classroom training in installation fire prevention activities to various age groups.
  • Inspects fire extinguishers and alarm systems for proper operation, adequacy and compliance.
  • Reviews plans for new construction and alteration/extension of existing structures and attends meetings involving all phases of the construction process.
  • Recommends changes and additions for construction to ensure compliance with fire prevention and protection requirements.
  • Inspects and submits requests for correction of deficiencies in a variety of complex fire protection equipment and systems.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform and/or appropriate safety apparel while on duty.
  • This position requires the employee to work a 60-hour work week/120 hours per pay period and may be required to work overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions and a Government License to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 5% of the time.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience for GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes(1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized fire department; (2) Assisting with providing training in fire protection and prevention; and (3) Participation in conducting inspections of facilities/buildings and alarm, detection, and suppression systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-06).

OR

Specialized Experience for GS-08: (1) Conducting fire/safety inspections to identify, reduce or eliminate the hazards that cause fires; (2) Assisting with conducting and providing education programs on the prevention, detection of fires to other firefighters and/or community; and (3) Reviewing plans for new construction, alterations and/or modifications to buildings and/or structures to ensure compliance with fire codes and/or fire prevention practices.

Selective Placement Factors:In addition to the above requirements, this position requires the incumbent to have and maintain the following certifications issued by one of the following: Department of Defense (DOD), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Professional Qualification System (NPQS)/Pro-Board.

To qualify at the GS-07 grade level, this position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain the following certifications:

  • Fire Inspector I
  • Fire Instructor I
  • HAZMAT Awareness
  • Fire Inspector II (Must obtain within 12 months from date of entry into DoD fire service).
  • Fire Life and Safety Educator (FLSE) (Must obtain within 12 months from date of entry into DoD fire service).
OR

To qualify at the GS-08 grade level, this position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain the following certifications:

  • Fire Officer I
  • Fire Inspector II
  • Fire Instructor I
  • HAZMAT Awareness
  • Airport Firefighter
  • Fire Life and Safety Educator (FLSE)
  • Emergency Medical Technician (CURRENT State or National Registry).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
