Summary

About the position: This position is Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) and will be assigned to the Outdoor Recreation, Swimming Pool at Travis Air Force Base, CA.

This is a temporary position not to exceed 1 December 2026.

Certification training will be provided by Outdoor Recreation.


Intermittent (Flexible) employees have no guaranteed hours but, may work up to 40 hours per week.

Duties

Help

  • Responsible for leading three or more lifeguards in the performance of lifeguard and related swimming facility duties.
  • Distributes and balances workload in accordance with established directives.
  • Ensures timely accomplishment of work assignments.
  • Maintains records or work accomplishment as required by program directive/procedures.
  • Instructs lower graded lifeguards in specific tasks, procedures, and techniques, make available written instructions, material, and supplies.
  • Gives on the job training to new employees.
  • Maintains a current knowledge and answers questions of other employees on procedure, policies, and directives, and obtains needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems.
  • Refers problems or matters not covered by instruction, as well as problem in meeting performance standards to supervisors.
  • Reports to supervisor on employee performance, progress, and training needs and on disciplinary problems.
  • Attempts to resolve informal complaints and refers other to supervisor.
  • Assists aquatic manager in coordinating weekly work out/in-service training to include lifesavings skills, customer service and fitness.
  • Monitors activities within assigned swimming areas.
  • Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and renders first aid to injuries.
  • Assist in maintaining, cleaning the facility.
  • Oversees daily cash register duties including end of day close outs and opening procedures.

  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain an approved and current nationally recognized certification in lifesaving and water rescue methods and skills, as well as basic first aid training, and CPR (both child and adult) training.
  • This position requires satisfactory completion of pre-employment checks in accordance with Air Force DoD policy, and a Child Care Tier 1 background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be of legal age to be employed at a Non-Appropriated Fund position, which is 16 years old.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Qualifying Experience:
Must have experience which provides a practical knowledge of swimming activities, rules, and procedures and skill in the use and maintenance of various pool and safety equipment is desirable. Must be able to work an irregular tour of duty to include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Water Safety Instructor certificate is highly desirable for this position. Must be able to obtain an approved and current nationally recognized certification in lifesaving and water rescue methods and skills, as well as basic training, and CPR (both child and adult) training. Must be at least 16 years of age.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.
