This vacancy is for an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Leader Office of Facilities and Environmental Quality within the Department of Commerce. In this position, you will serve as a master Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, adjustment, and repair of non-standard and highly advanced heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, associated fixtures, controls, and equipment in the Herbert C. Hoover Building (HCHB).

Duties

Help

As a Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Leader, you will perform the following duties:

  • Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots specialized equipment, ensuring optimal performance, energy efficiency, and user satisfaction.
  • Installs, modifies, maintains, and repairs building HVAC systems, including the Chilled Water Production Facility in the HCHB.
  • Develops and implements preventative maintenance programs for building HVAC systems, ensuring the reliability and longevity of equipment and infrastructure.
  • Tracks, schedules, and documents all installation, maintenance, and repair activities, ensuring efficient work order management and accurate recordkeeping.
  • Collaborates with other departments and contractors on projects requiring HVAC system expertise, ensuring proper integration of building systems into the overall building design and operation.
  • Conducts regular inspections and assessments of building HVAC systems to identify potential hazards, maintenance issues, or performance improvements, and develops corrective action plans as needed.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C and evaluated under OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence that demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.

Your qualifications will be evaluated against the prescribed screen-out element, which appears as a question in the online questionnaire. The applicants who possess the minimal acceptable level of the screen-out are given further consideration, and those who do not are rated ineligible and eliminated. Your qualifications will be evaluated against the following screen-out:

Ability to do the Work of the Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. This includes operating, maintaining, and repairing nonstandard, highly advanced Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems in large commercial buildings.

AND

A Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) Refrigerant Certification (Type I, II, III, or Universal) is required upon hire or within one year of employment.

A Stationary Engineer license or equivalent is preferred.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations, e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social. Volunteer work builds critical knowledge and skills, offers valuable training and experience, and translates directly to paid employment. Office of the Secretary

The Office of the Secretary is the general management arm of the department and provides the principal support to the Secretary in formulating policy and in providing advice to the President. It provides program leadership for the department's functions and exercises general supervision over the operating units.
