About the Position: Sierra Army Depot is located in Herlong CA, a rural town in Northern California. Herlong is approximately 60 miles north of Reno, NV, and 35 miles south of Susanville, CA. The depot serves as an Army Expeditionary Logistical Support Center. Employees work Mon-Thurs, 0630-1700 hrs. Youth Facilities and childcare available. Duties

Help
  • Operate one or more types of heavy equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth to rough specifications on such projects as breaking new ground for trails, roads, or construction sites.
  • Operate equipment for preparation for road beds or forms, erosion control, hardstands, storage sites and parking lots; the construction, maintenance or repair of roads.
  • Operate heavy equipment with following attachments; scarifier, rippers and dozer blades. Operates heavy equipment to excavate, backfill, compact, roll, or level earth to rough specifications
  • Operate a variety of engineering equipment and motor vehicles such as front end loaders, scrapers, graders, backhoes, water tenders, dump trucks, semi- truck tractor with belly dump/lowboy in the construction.
  • Drive a variety of dump, tank and cargo trucks with a load capacity of up to and greater than 4 tons to move materials supplies and equipment (e.g. sand, gravel, water, oil, building materials, scrap and trash) throughout the depot.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state Commercial Driver's License (CDL) certification requirements outlined in AMC-R (Army Materials Command Regulation) 350-4. MUST upload a copy of CDL for verification.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • The duty of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted and subject to a pre-employment screening and random testing.
  • This position require to have his/her name on a call out list and be called back to work during non-duty hours (including weekends) to support emergency situations or make emergency repairs.
  • Incumbent may be required to obtain Emergency Response training certifications and participate on the Sierra's Emergency Response Team. Due to the installation's agreement to assist the surrounding communities with emergency situations.
  • This is a Term position scheduled to last 2 years. A term position may be extended to a maximum of eight years depending upon the needs of management.
  • Term employment is subject to a one year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Engineering Equipment Operator (Motor Vehicle Operator) ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties of Engineering Equipment Operator (Motor Vehicle Operator). I can operate heavy equipment to prepare construction sites and drive various motor vehicles to transport materials. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT - Work involves heavy physical effort in pushing, pulling and depressing various levers, clutches, and brakes. Such work involves continuous control changes to maneuver engineer equipment, crane, or load around obstructions, to stay within angle or lifting capacity. Subject to strain caused by vibration of equipment being operated; and from jerking and jolting motions while accomplishing work requirements. Incumbent is required to lift objects weighing up to 45 pounds; and occasionally, with assistance, move objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Operator: The operator frequently lifts and carries moderately heavy objects such as cables, chains and jacks. He continually reaches, bends, stoops, pushes and pulls while attaching rigging to the object to be moved. He frequently uses his entire body weight to push or pull suspended loads, chain falls or load tag lines while moving objects into desired positions. He stands and walks for prolonged periods of time and frequently climbs on platforms or other structures to signal the crane operator.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS - Work is performed in all types of weather and terrain including side hills slopes and rolling surfaces. Incumbent is subject to injury from traffic hazards and overturning equipment. Operator is exposed to extremes of weather, to vibration, dust, dirt, oil, and water and engine exhaust fumes and to danger from swinging loads, moving machinery overturning and breakage of cables. Subject to possible serious injury while operating equipment in fire suppression, actual/ simulated emergency situations and while working at or in close proximity to ammunition or explosives. Exposure to unusually severe working conditions, hazards or physical hardships will be compensated by payment of authorized environmental differentials.
