Duties

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-08. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As an Expert Archives Technician, you will:

  • Respond to a variety of types of requests for information regarding military service.
  • Communicate directly with all levels of customers, including high level officials, members of the media, congressional representatives, in person, by telephone, or by e-mail, to obtain clarification of the request and/or additional information which may facilitate the response to the request and to provide information regarding MPR processes and procedures.
  • Provide information to less-experience technicians regarding rarely used sources and/or obscure locations in response to unusual, sensitive, and/or highly complex inquiries.
  • Serve and/or lead Center-wide teams in the development and/or implementation of processes and procedures regarding record-keeping practices, policies regarding release of records, and other records related issues.
  • Provide formal and/or on-the-job (OJT) training to less-experienced team members.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week on your resume.

  • A probationary or trial period may be required. Continued employment is contingent upon supervisory certification that continued employment will benefit the Federal Service; the certification will occur no less than 30 days before the end of the probationary/trial period.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
  • The work is normally sedentary, with the exception of walking response documents to the requester's location on the same floor of the building. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience for the GS-06: You must have at least one year of experience at the GS-05 level or equivalent that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:

  • Responding to customer inquiries, verbally or in writing. AND
  • Applying regulations and policies to accomplish work assignments.


In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following requirements, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F):
Time-in-Grade: For the GS-06, you must have been at the GS-05level for 52 weeks.

Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.
