Duties

Help

Provides surgical support of a highly specialized nature to patients undergoing surgery, including the newest and most complex, state-of-the-art procedures in fourteen (14) surgical specialties.
Mixes medications as required for use under the direction of nurse and/or surgeon.
Hands instruments to the surgeon during the procedure by anticipating the surgeon's needs while safely handling blades, needles, and other objects.
Assists surgeons during surgery with tissue retraction, insertion of tubes, intravenous lines, or closure of surgical wounds.
Maintains alertness for complications developing during surgery such as hemorrhage, shock and cardiac arrest and immediately supplies instruments, drugs, and supplies to correct the condition.
Assists with securing surgical dressings to the operative site postoperatively.
Coordinates with anesthesia personnel to maintain patient temperature.
Performs sponge, needle, and sharps count during various periods of all surgical procedures.
Maintains a national certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or National Board on Certification in Surgical technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTASA).

A pre-placement medical examination is required.
Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes preparing patients before and after surgery procedures; maintaining medical equipment/tools used during surgical procedures; and/or assisting surgical team during procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education: Successful completion of a 2-year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
The employee must also possess and maintain a national certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or National Board on Certification in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTASA).
