Duties

Help
  • The primary purpose of this position is to perform a wide range of specialized and complex technical duties in support of physicians conducting gastroenterological procedures, such as endoscopies and colonoscopies.
  • Incumbent will independently perform Manometry studies, 24-hour Ph studies, and pill cam studies.
  • The incumbent serves as a primary assistant to the physician during a variety of endoscopic procedures, including but not limited to upper endoscopies, sigmoidoscopies, and colonoscopies.
  • They anticipate the physician's needs, passing instruments, and manipulating equipment as directed.
  • The technician is responsible for collecting, handling, and labeling patient specimens, such as biopsies and polyps, and ensuring they are sent for analysis.
  • They monitor the patient's vital signs and comfort throughout the procedure, alerting the physician and nursing staff to any abnormalities or signs of distress.
  • Administrative responsibilities include maintaining endoscope reprocessing logs, high-level disinfection reprocessing unit maintenance logs, endoscope cabinet maintenance logs, and unit competencies.
  • The technician is a key member of the procedural team, responsible for preparing the patient, assisting during the procedure, and maintaining all specialized medical instrumentation.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Position is full-time (Mon-Fri). Working hours are from 6:45 AM to 3:15 PM.
  • Position is designated mission/weather essential during inclement weather or other appropriate emergency conditions
  • Required to complete a preemployment medical examination and may require an annual physical or medical surveillance examination.
  • Position is required to wear and use personal protective equipment as needed.
  • Required to complete a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and/or American Red Cross.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer .
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the employee to obtain Hepatitis B immunizations and Tuberculosis testing unless exempt by physician.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical annually and thereafter.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience as an endoscopy technician, which includes 1) supporting clinical procedures, such as endoscopy (EGD, Colonoscopy); 2) decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and documentation, of reusable medical and surgical instrumentation; 3) maintaining sterile environments; assisting with patient preparation, vital sign monitoring, and basic clinical documentation; 4) infection control practices and standard operating procedures in a clinical setting.. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Gastroenterology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
