Duties

Help

As a Supervisory Legal Administrative Specialist, in the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) District of Hawaii, you will provide a wide range of legal support services to one or more Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs), one or more Paralegal Specialists involved in criminal proceedings, and supervise a professional team of Legal Administrative Specialists and Legal Assistants. Your duties will include:

  • Supervise, direct, and provide oversight to six or more employees and provide all first-line supervisory functions.
  • Provide technical advice on legal automation requirements and systems capabilities to facilitate decisions, trial preparation and trial presentation.
  • Prepare a variety of trial related documents, e.g., letters, exhibits lists, and trial subpoenas.
  • Develop and enter various case material into a computer database.
  • Perform a wide range of information system analysis, development, and installation in support of District support activities for assigned cases.
  • Perform work that involves communicating through visual means.
  • Perform a variety of administrative duties to support AUSAs.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

  • If selected, you will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a one year supervisory or managerial probationary period unless this requirement has been met previously.

  • You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.

Qualifications

GS-11: To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education, OR a Combination of Education and Experience.

Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in the Federal service or equivalent paid/nonpaid experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as coordinating legal office administrative functions; mentoring and providing training for legal support staff; assisting attorneys and legal support staff in organizing and analyzing voluminous case information; providing administrative and technical legal expertise to support staff; supporting attorneys during court proceedings or other live case presentations, such as by using trial presentation software and equipment to display exhibits or demonstratives, maintaining accounting system of exhibits, and managing witnesses; and providing customer support to case team members on using technology to organize, review, produce, and/or present case information.

Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law, Legal Studies): a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate degree; OR 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 2 full years.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above education requirements if you can show that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
