Area 1: All currently employed full-time permanent and indefinite personnel of the Connecticut Army National Guard. Area 2: All currently employed full-time temporary technician personnel and all current traditional members of the Connecticut Army National Guard.
This is an indefinite position that may convert to permanent without further competition.
JOB SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to serve as a working leader of at least three employees in accomplishing trades and labor work. The highest level of nonsupervisory work led is Machinist, WG-3414-11.
NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. This is an excepted position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the Connecticut Army National Guard.
The major duties include, but are not limited to:
Passes on instructions received from the supervisor, demonstrates proper work methods, and starts work for other workers.
Operates a variety of shop machines, including the engine lathe, milling machine, radial or sensitive drill press, grinding machine, bench late, bench grinder, shaper, planner, saws, horizontal and vertical boring mill, and jig boring machine.
Assists with setting up and programming Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) using machine controller, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) Software and operating machine tools such as lathes, horizontal and vertical, boring mills, bench, plain, or universal milling machines, shapers, planers, internal and external grinders, thread grinders, radial drills, jig borers, jig grinders, hobbing machines, gear generators, 3D printers, 3D scanners, laser engravers/cutters and numerically controlled machine tools.
Determines requirements for work procedures, types of machines and equipment, and proper types of metal for application.
Manufactures, repairs, tests, inspects, and reworks metal devices and parts used with and on aircraft and related aircraft maintenance equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a well-lighted, heated, ventilated shop with concrete floors. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil form machines, dirt, heat, noises, and fumes. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with lubricants and abrasive compounds, and to strains from in frequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, safety shoes and other safety apparel and equipment, as required.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires standing, stooping, bending, and reaching, and frequent handling of objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally objects weighing as much as 40 pounds; however, hoists, hand trucks, lifts, and other workers are available to assist with heavier items.

Qualifications
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with sufficient knowledge to complete the work of this occupational series. Experience or training which demonstrates the candidates ability to lead other technicians engaged in the duties performed by this occupational series.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Your resume and any other supporting documentation you wish to provide must clearly substantiate you currently possess 24 months of specialized experience in the following:
Experience or training performing the full range of machining operations on most types of conventional or CNC machine tools and their various attachments.
Experience or training in planning and lay out work from blueprints, worksheets and other drawings that may have missing or incorrect information.
Experience applying shop mathematics in establishing needed dimensions, such as those required for chasing threads or machining angular surfaces; locating and marking surfaces and angles to be machined.
Experience programming machining operations, setting up and operating CNC machine tools.
Experience demonstrating knowledge of and ability to apply advanced shop mathematics such as geometric and trigonometric formulas to make computation for laying out work, machining pieces at unusual or compound angles, determining gear ratios pitch, angles and other similar exact or precision dimension.
Experience which demonstrates the ability to plan, organize, and lead the work of others in fields directly related the repair function of this occupational series.
Experience performing administrative functions; to read and interpret a variety of technical publications used in the repair of supported equipment.
Experience providing guidance to others in work related directly to this occupational series.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to plan and accomplish a functional shop maintenance program is essential.
Skill in surveillance and troubleshooting techniques is required.
Knowledge and skill in determining work methods and techniques to be used in the machining of parts, fixtures, and assemblies for the repair, rebuild and overhaul of maintenance mission.
Knowledge in interpreting difficult, complex and incomplete blueprints, drawings, specifications, workorders, etc.
Skill in laying out work by measuring and making straight lines, areas, circles, angles, and location points in different planes as guides for setting up workpieces.
Skill in setting up and operating non-conventional machines or special adapted or modified conventional machines such as jig borers, jig grinder, hobbing machines, lathe, special designed horizontal and vertical boring mill, jig milling machine, tracer lathe and numerically controlled machine tools in carrying out work assignments.
Ability to select standard tools, jigs and fixtures and modify them as necessary to adapt and extend the use of machine tools to achieve specific dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes.
Skill in operating machine tools to cut, drill, bore, tap, ream shape, turn, mill, grind, hone, and lap items.
Ability to perform heat treating of metal and maintain dimensional accuracy during machining processes using measuring instruments.
Knowledge in using precision measuring instruments such as universal protractor, dial indicators, micrometer, depth and feeler gage, calipers, squares, profilometers, surface and angle plates, comparators, scales, dividers, scribers, and other similar devices.
COMPATIBLE MILITARY ASSIGNMENT: All applications will be considered regardless of Branch/AOC/FA/MOS. Incumbent will be required to be assigned to compatible military position within 1 year of selection. The selected individual may be required to attend formal technician school training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: This position is covered by the medical monitoring program. Individual selected must undergo a preemployment physical examination prior to appointment. This position requires a security clearance (secret) which the applicant must possess or be able to obtain a clearance within one year of appointment. For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver's license for the state in which they live or are principally employed.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Training at the National Guard Professional Education Center (NGPEC) is a mandatory condition of employment, subject to availability of resources. NGB prescribed courses at NGPEC must be completed within 6 months of assignment to this position. Failure to complete course(s) may result in reassignment or termination of full-time employment unless extenuating circumstances preclude course attendance.
