Major duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Conducts patient assessments, assesses severity of illness/injury and identifies life threatening problems
  • Complete assessments to obtain history, status of patient's neurological system, cardiovascular system, circulatory system, skeletal system, orthopedic system, motor and sensory skills and level of consciousness for the purpose of safe transport.
  • Provide patient triage and take/records patient's vital signs as needed.
  • Provide and gather information on the human body structure, function, illnesses and diseases, and the treatment procedure supporting patient charting.
  • Administers basic life support care at emergency scene in accordance with established medical standards, which may include providing CPR, and/or drug treatments.
  • Performs invasive and non-invasive procedures on patients with life threatening and non-life- threatening conditions.
  • Operates or utilizes various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment, tools and supplies which may include ambulance, extrication tools, blood pressure cuff, AED, glucose monitor, oxygen terminal, pulse oximetry monitor, medical supplies, radio communications equipment, and general office equipment.
  • Prioritizes treatments for patients having multiple problems and employs a variety of established emergency medicine techniques, methods, and equipment.
  • Determines/prioritizes appropriate medical treatment/procedures and need for additional assistance.
  • Performs a variety of supporting diagnostic duties which include taking, recording and reporting to the supervisor unusual deviations in vital signs.
  • Takes appropriate measures to prevent disease transmission or exposure to bodily fluids.
  • Determines how the patient can be moved and to which medical facility the patient should be transported.
  • Assists in lifting and carrying patients into or out of transport vehicles and into treatment facility
  • Provides a thorough safety inspection and operator maintenance (e.g., monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure, etc.).
  • Ensures that the vehicles are kept clean and neat and decontaminates the vehicles in accordance with Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) established procedures
  • Operate emergency transport vehicle and uses telephone and radio communications equipment and systems. Have skills and familiarity with emergency and patient transport vehicle characteristics to safely operate the vehicle under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions to provide emergency and patient transportation.
Work Schedule: Monday -Friday, 0730-1600 and subject to change to Rotating Shifts with compressed tours, including Holidays. Subject to occasional recall to maintain adequate coverage, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  • Physical Demands: EMT work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients in a variety of situations; recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients, frequently under adverse conditions or in confined areas; required to spend prolonged periods in protective breathing apparatus/protective clothing during chemical, nuclear, biological, or hazardous materials incidents/exercises.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted driver's license to operate government owned/leased vehicles.
  • In accordance with 38 U.S.C.7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/08/2026.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): The Health Aid and Technician Series, 0640 has a minimum qualification entry requirement.

  • Specialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. AND,
You may qualify based on your experience and/or educations described below:
  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: knowledge of a majority of body systems, such as skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and genitourinary, to perform patient examination and to provide prompt, efficient, and appropriate patient care and handling. EMTs shall have a well-developed working knowledge of physiological and topographic anatomy, right/left, surface, proximal/distal, superior/ inferior to accurately transmit location information about the body and its functions. Skill and familiarity with emergency and patient transport vehicle characteristics to safely operate the vehicle under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions to provide emergency and patient transportation, Broad knowledge of the local road system and skill in the pre-selection and planning of the route to ensure the safe and expedient transport of patients to the proper health care facility, Skilled and knowledge of proper operator maintenance to ensure vehicle meets safety and operating requirements, Knowledge of protocols and treatments used in the delivery of emergency care for persons injured in chemical, nuclear, biological, and hazardous materials incidents, knowledge and skills sufficient to provide and gather information on the human body structure, function, illnesses and diseases, and the treatment procedure supporting patient charting and goals for the assigned patient for the purpose of communicating with the patients and nursing/medical staff member. OR,
  • Education: One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. OR,
  • Combination: A combination of graduate education and specialized experience. The total percentage of specialized experience and education when added together must equal 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-G6, i.e. 9 credit hours and 6 months of specialized experience are equivalent to 1 year.
Working Environment: On a regular and recurring basis, employee is exposed to infection and contagious diseases, is required to work in all types of weather and traffic conditions, and faces risks and discomforts at the scene of accidents, to include the possibility of noxious fumes, dangerous substances, cuts, bruises, etc., requiring the EMT to comply with special safety and health precautions and/or to use protective gear. Work may also expose the EMT to patients who are intoxicated, under the influence of drugs or mentally unstable resulting in belligerent and sometimes violent behavior.
