Duties

Help

Conducts specialized aeromedical physical exams, utilizing extended specialized training from successful completion of the Army Flight Surgeon Course and professional experience actively monitors assigned ARNG personnel to enhance aircrew health and safety and prepare/update case management records for personnel with flight duty, deployment, or fitness restrictions. Obtains and maintains access to, training for, and provides clinically relevant input into Soldiers' electronic health care records - including MHS Genesis, MEDPROS, AERO, and the Centralized Aviation Flight Records System (CAFRS) - to complete Flying Duty Medical Examinations (Initial, long, short, Aeromedical summaries) for all applicants to US Army Aeromedical Activity (AAMA) and current aircrew members. Keep Commanders appraised of Medical Recommendation for Flying or Special Operations Duty using DD Form 2992. Maintains situational awareness of current Aeromedical Policy Letters (APLs), Aeromedical Technical Bulletins. Management of flight waivers and associated documents. Coordinate care and specialized examinations to be conducted at Fort Novosel or other locations in support of aeromedical requirements. Provide input on formulary medications including stockage levels, storage and reporting requirements, and surge requirements. Coordinate maintenance of aeromedical records with aviation units and MEDDET teams. Uses clinical skills and knowledge to complete comprehensive medical and physical assessments, and preventative medical services for assigned soldiers IAW with prescribed regulations, policies and orders. Perform soldier evaluations including physical examinations to determine if the standards of AR 40-501 are met in response to Commander requests (e.g., Fit for Duty Evaluations, specialty exams for schools and positions). Establish clear and concise communication with the referring provider as necessary. Ensure COCOM guidance criteria and waiver submission accordingly. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • This position requires a SECRET security clearance, the incumbent of this position must obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance, some organizations may require a TOP SECRET.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain credentialing, privileging through the National Guard's Centralized Credentialing and Privileging Preparation Board.
  • Possess a valid, unrestricted license in the US State, territory, or the District of Columbia to practice medicine, board eligible or board certified to include maintaining continuing medical education (CME) hours.
  • Employee will be required to wear and use personal protective equipment as required and provided by the employer.
  • Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.
  • The employee is subject to random drug testing.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • This position is covered by Health Affairs Policy 96006, 23 October 1996, which requires the employee to obtain Hepatitis B Immunization unless exempted by a physician.
  • Prior to appointment the applicant must be flight/aeromedical qualified, refresher training IAW with the Army policy and regulations.

Qualifications

Must have experience or knowledge in each of the following:
1. Experience working with or knowledge of military medical organizational structure, policies and procedures to review records/referrals and determine appropriate aeromedical and operational dispositions of line of duty and medical continuation determinations; separation history and physical exams; incapacitation pay; convalescent leave; and the need for disability evaluation system processing; flight and occupational exams and waivers.
2. Experience working with or knowledge of pharmaceuticals in order to prescribe medication required for medical readiness in support of deployments.
3. Experience assessing, diagnosing, treating, and prescribing medication for specified illnesses in accordance with current modalities within scopes of practice and to recognize conditions requiring physical attention and intervention.
4. Experience identifying a medical problem and determining appropriate action to meet the problem, including referral to an attending physician.
5. Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, and to establish and maintain rapport with patients and their family members in order to facilitate health care counseling guidance and health maintenance instructions.
6. Ability to teach patients healthy regimen and responsibility required to achieve wellness.

Education

Education cannot be substituted for Specialized Experience for this position.
