Duties

Help
  • Develop plans for police response to emergencies such as traffic/crowd control or security of facilities.
  • Provide policy and program oversight to police investigations.
  • Submit recruitments, promotions or disciplinary actions to Chief of Police.
  • Oversee daily execution of police activity to include patrol operations and traffic law enforcement.
  • Prepare written performance standards/appraisals for employees.
  • Advise staff of regulation changes/updates that affect operations.
  • Coordinate law enforcement support with other local, state or federal agencies.
  • Coordinate requests for police support at special events such as ceremonies or festivals.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must possess a valid state driver's license and be able to obtain and maintain a government motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Incumbent must wear chemical protection masks, gloves and other associated equipment.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent must pass a Physical Agility Test (PAT) within 30 days of hire date and annually thereafter.
  • Successful graduation from the United States Army Civilian Police Academy or willingness to attend the United States Army Civilian Police Academy after appointment.
  • Incumbent must be qualified/certified to use police weapons, crime scene evidence collecting equipment, automated police information retrieval systems, chemical aerosol irritants, tear gas and radar gun.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain state certification for radar and breathalyzer operations.
  • Incumbent must comply with and maintain the requirements of the Individual Reliability Program (IRP) IAW AR 190-56.
  • The 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 covers this position. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence are not eligible for this position.
  • This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) and is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience:
External Applicants: One year of specialized experience which includes 1.) Performing law enforcement activities such as patrol, criminal investigations and apprehensions/arrests; 2.) Providing training/guidance on law enforcement regulations and procedures; and 3.) Completing managerial functions such as performance evaluation, delegating tasks, conducting interviews and preparing reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).

Current Federal Employees: One year of specialized experience which includes 1.) Assisting with law enforcement operations in areas such as prevention, detection, and/or reporting of crimes; 2.) Responding to/investigating emergency calls; 3.) Managing aspects of personnel administration such as evaluating performance, preparing schedules and assigning work and 4.) Ensuring compliance with police operations and administration policies/procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
