Duties

Help

The primary purpose of this position is to perform patient escort services for the health care center. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Escorts non-critical ill patients; pickup and delivery of items such as specimens and clinical reports; and messenger service within the Medical Center.
  • Transports patients by wheelchair, stretcher, or bed to and from nursing units, clinical laboratories, and other related clinical areas.
  • Transports non-critically ill patients throughout the health care center, which may include multiple separate buildings.
  • Maintains effective interpersonal relationship with patients, significant others and co-workers directed toward patient care.
  • Ensures that Escort Service's assigned wheelchairs and stretchers are returned to the Escort area for proper utilization and accountability purposes.
  • Provides for environmental, patient, and personal safety by using proper body mechanics, safety devices and techniques, and reporting unsafe conditions.
  • Takes corrective action during simple potentially hazardous situations, i.e., removing objects blocking emergency exists. Reports any observed emergencies to the appropriate personnel.
  • Reports any observed changes in the physical appearance and/or character of the patient during transport to the appropriate medical personnel.
  • Files, answers telephone, and performs receptionist activities as needed for the Escort Department.
  • Engages in proper telephone etiquette when answering the telephone and taking ticket information.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/07/2026.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

  • General Experience (GS-02): You must have three (3) months of general experience that demonstrates your ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation? Experience would typically include but is not limited to: general office clerical work in a healthcare environment, assisting or transporting patients in a medical environment, acting as a messenger or delivery person in a medical environment. OR,
  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Work includes walking, standing, lifting, pushing, stooping, reaching, sitting, bending. Practice of proper body mechanics.
