Duties

Help
  • Perform mutual quality control checks on the work of fellow Specimen Controllers on a daily basis.
  • Perform technical and administrative support functions necessary for successful unit mission accomplishment.
  • Perform a wide variety of detail-oriented technical and administrative duties in a narrow specialty area of a scientific field.
  • Use a computer in support of specimen accessioning and handling.
  • Receive, process, inventory and store unique and often irreplaceable urine specimens that are used in proceedings and are subject to legal discovery.
  • Analyze and ensure that the data listed on the specimen correlates to the data on the chain of custody document and that the container was properly sealed, thus determining acceptability of specimen for testing.

  • You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • May be subject to rotating shift work.
  • Employees are expected to complete a certification program that will be provided by the agency prior to promotion to the full performance level. Certification must be completed within 6 months of appointment.
  • This position requires the incumbent to frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 15 pounds.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Frequent local travel and occasional temporary duty (TDY) business travel may be required (may require hotel stay for multiple nights to meet mission requirement).
  • One year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • Additional requirements may be determined as positions arise and will be communicated during the hiring process if you are selected.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience GS-06: Oneyear of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) utilizing a computer to record, store, and retrieve medical information; 2) sending customer inquiries to the appropriate personnel; AND 3) taking inventory of specified items to ensure accuracy of reports.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

  • Position is being filled at the GS-6 Management may fill at any grade level. Duties described reflect the full performance GS-7 level. Duties will be performed in a developmental capacity under close supervision. The recruitment provides promotion opportunity to the target grade of the position without further competition when the selectee is eligible and recommended by management.
  • At the GS-06 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-07. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds. Promotion is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
  • Relocation/Recruitment incentive or service credit for non-Federal work experience (advanced leave accrual) may be authorized if determined to be in the organization's interest.
