Duties

Help
  • You will install, modify, repair new/existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment; steam-heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, circulating pumps, and radiators.
  • You will remove, clean, replace, pack, and seal defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems such as traps, sections of broken tile pipe, sewer lines, and leaking drains.
  • You will install, maintain, and repair a variety of heating and air conditioning units to include: oil lines, air lines, water lines, steam lines, valves, pipes, flexible hose connections, or other related parts.
  • You will trace system malfunctions and replace fixtures such as safety devices, heating elements, valves, strainers, coils, and other related minor controls.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require occasional travel from normal duty station. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a PIPEFITTER without more than normal supervision performing: 1) Troubleshoot and test piping systems and equipment for proper circulation, flow, pressure and leak free joints; 2) Plan and layout installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment including various kinds of piping, risers, and flexible branches at the proper level and incline; and 3) Operate various hand and power tools and devices (e.g., hand and power pipe threaders and cutters, flanges, pipe wrenches, grinders, templates, sliding squares, measuring tapes, chalk lines, plumb bobs, etc.).

A 40 hour work week is typical for this position.
This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. The work involves standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dust, and greasy. May be required to make installations and repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. The work may involve exposure to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. May occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
