• Perform ecosystem and threatened / endangered species monitoring requirements.
• Implement wildlife management to include prescribed burning, vegetation management, nuisance wildlife control, and game and fish management applications.
• Direct the efforts of a team with diverse backgrounds and experience levels in completing wildlife and endangered species management.
• Provide professional expertise required to operationally plan, manage, and execute the endangered species, fish and wildlife program on approximately 150,000 acres of the Installation.
• Adjust to changing environmental conditions and military training effects on the landscape to successfully achieve critical mission requirements for endangered species management.
• Collect data and samples for analysis and conduct statistical analysis and evaluation of data and prepares reports.
• Apply wildlife management techniques to properly manage a diverse ecosystem.

Conditions of employment

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Subject to call 24 hours a day, seven days a week in case of emergency to suppress forest fires.
• Subject to weekend shift assignments.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
• Incumbent must maintain Class B Commercial Driver's License or be able to obtain one within eight months of hire date.
• Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

Basic Requirement for Wildlife Biologist

A. I have a bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological science that included at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; AND at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); AND at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

B. I have a combination of education and experience equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) assisting in conducting surveys for threatened, and endangered species, and assisting in the implementation of wildlife habitat management and conservation projects; 2) assisting in the implementation of prescribed burning; and using aerial photographs, topography maps, and navigation tools ; 3) assisting in applying habitat management techniques related to the biology, behavior and ecosystems of fish and wildlife species. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: wildlife biology.

OR

Superior Academic Achievement. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in Education above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on:
(1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR
(2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR
(3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achshonor.org/).

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.


Specialized Experience GS-09: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Independently conducts threatened and endangered wildlife management surveys and activities such as: emphasis on accurate data collection, adherence to conservation policy and management plans; 2) Independently implements wildlife habitat improvement activities to include prescribing burning; and using aerial photographs, topography maps, and navigation tools. 3) Independently evaluates habitat and executes wildlife habitat and forest management plans for fish and wildlife species. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: wildlife biology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience GS-11: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Coordinates, directs personnel, and/or conducts threatened and endangered wildlife management surveys and activities such as: emphasis on accurate data collection and database management, adherence to safety, conservation policy and management plans; 2) Coordinates, directs personnel, and/or conducts wildlife habitat improvement activities to include prescribing burning, emphasis on safety of personnel, and adherence to prescribed burn and smoke management plans; 3) Reviews and/or develops wildlife habitat and forest management plans, prescribed burn plans, and environmental reviews (NEPA), and coordinates with other federal agencies, state wildlife agencies, conservation organizations, to ensure Endangered Species Act requirements are successfully accomplished; and 4) Executes an operational comprehensive management program for threatened and endangered species. Demonstrates professional knowledge, skill, techniques, processes, and procedures to overcome significant resource challenges related to program management for conservation of endangered species on a military installation. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

OR

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: wildlife biology.
