Summary

Position or assist in the positioning of patient and in draping the patient for the specific procedure.
Hand instruments to the surgeon during the procedure by anticipating the surgeon's needs.
Select, assemble, and organize required supplies, equipment, and instruments for specific surgical procedures.
Wash, disassemble, sterilize, and reassemble instruments after surgical procedure is complete.
Interview and selects candidates for vacant positions. Identify the training needs of subordinates.
Transport patients from hospital units to the Operating Room.
Screen patient prior to transport to ensure pre-operative medications have been given, jewelry, dentures, and any prosthetic devices have been removed.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
Child Care Checks: This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
Required to be screened for and obtain necessary immunizations/vaccinations (hepatitis, influenza, etc.), unless exempted by a licensed physician.
This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment.
This position is a Drug Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
This position requires, weekends and on call duties.
Certified Surgical Technician certification is required.
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting surgeons by passing instruments and monitoring patient fluid levels during the surgical procedures; preparing and screening patients prior to surgery to ensure readiness; assisting with patient transport, positioning, and draping for surgical procedures; identifying, cleaning, and sterilizing surgical instruments while preparing operating rooms and organizing essential equipment and supplies. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as, Surgical Technology, Surgical Nursing, or Surgery.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
