MAJOR DUTIES

In the absence of management, serves as duty manager to ensure the facility is functioning in a smooth, safe and efficient manner. This includes serving as point of contact to assigned subordinate staff, assuring tasks are in process/complete, providing necessary supplies and resolving minor problems and complaints of the employees. May make recommendations to the supervisor in regards to work performance of assignee staff.
Upon arrival, the incumbent checks the work schedule, taking note of on-call personnel for emergency needs. Ensures the facility is open and/closed at the posted time and in a state of cleanliness both inside and out. Reviews the schedule of events and ensures the facility is prepared prior to the scheduled start time.

As applicable, responsible for issuing, receiving and controlling cash receipts and change funds under custody. Upon end of shift or closing, rings out cash register. Assures the Daily Activity Report (DAR) is completed and certifies cash count of receipts and change funds turned in by individual cashiers. Determines cash shortages or overages by comparing total of cash receipts against cash register readings.

Completes the deposit form in accordance with local procedures.

Ensures all keys are turned into the lock box and/or cashiers bag.

Warns patrons of disorderly behavior or unsafe techniques or practices being utilized. Attempts to resolve problems in a tactful diplomatic manner.

May be required to tactfully remove disruptive patrons from the facility.

Upon closure of the facility, completes fire and safety checks, secures all doors, windows, storerooms, etc. Notifies the "trouble desk" of the Public Works Departmemt (CWPD) of any emergencies that may occur.

As needed, performs all or some of the following duties:

Conducts sailing lessons to authorized patrons, ensuring their safety on the water during the scheduled lesson. Administers, grades and evaluates the basic, intermediate, advanced and night qualifications sailing test in both written and practical areas.

Observes activities of patrons to ensure that safety rules are followed.

Provides information to patrons regarding safety rules and procedures. Enforces applicable policies and procedures of MWR regarding the use of the marina/sailing. Rescues boaters in need of assistance. Keeps boating area clean and free from hazards. conditions and makes decisions on sailing limitations and activities as appropriate for the given weather conditions.

Performs minor maintenance, which may include, but is not limited to changing batteries, painting, varnishing, and minor repairs to boat engines. Some fiberglass work is also required to maintain the sailboat and motorboat fleet.

Greets customers, rings-up sales for merchandise, answers phone and checks 1.0. cards to ensure only authorized patrons utilize the program.

Answers questions in regards to hours of operation, upcoming events, special events, merchandise availability and cost.

Operates a cash register,ringing sales and providing correct change to the customer.

At end of shift, completes the Activity Report (DAR), ensures all cash handling/reporting/securing requirements are met, venf1es the amount of money collected and drops the cashier bag into the drop safe.

Ensures the proper preparation and display of merchandise. Receives merchandise from storage area. Inventories and verifies shipments and stock items in accordance with established stock location procedures. Continually observes quantities of stock, and replenishes as necessary to maintain· established levels·; Rearranges· stock and displays ·to accommodate new; seasonal" or fast moving items. Maintains sales and storage areas in a neat, orderly condition at all times. As directed, assists with inventory of merchandise.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Must be able to pass. a standard-swim test by swimming- two widths of the-pool without t9uching bottom or any other support
  • Must possess and maintain current CPR and First Aid Certifications within 30 days of hire
  • This position is subject to an irregular tour, which may include weekends and holiday work

Qualifications

Must be a minimum of 18 years of age with a minimum one-year specific experience in a sailing facility or program.

Must be familiar with boating terminology, water and boating safety, handling of boats ,(launching, mooring, etc).

Must be able to handle both small and large sailboats in heavy winds.

Must be able to conduct on the water rescues by controlling both the chase boat and the boat being rescued.

Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and written to understand instructions given and provide clear information to boaters.

Knowledge of basic arithmetic to compute charges, make change accurately and prepare reports.

Work is primarily performed both inside and outside in areas that may be hot, damp, cold and drafty or poorly lit.

This position is subject to prolonged standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, climbing of stairs or ladders/scaffolds and lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 45 pounds without assistance. Although hazards are minimized through safety procedures, employee will be subjected to many conditions inherent to an active sailing/boating environment.


Must be a mature individual with documented leadership abilities, who can exercise control over a large group of people to ensure good order and discipline as necessary.

Must possess positive customer service

Basic skill in the use of hand tools.

Education

This position does not have a positive education requirement.

Salary is dependent on experience and/or education.Executive Order 12564 requires a Federal workplace free of illegal drugs.
