  • Serves as a maintenance mechanic in an organizational segment whose main mission involves preventative maintenance, unscheduled repairs and documentation for a fleet of government equipment.
  • Performs the full range of field level overhaul, repair, and preventive maintenance on a wide variety of fixed, semi-fixed and portable industrial equipment.
  • The equipment covers a broad range of commercial, industrial and special-purpose machinery, to include security force protection/anti-terrorism vehicle restraint systems (Active Vehicle Barriers).
  • Performs repair and preventive maintenance on a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles such as, bulldozers, road graders, front-end loaders, backhoes and similar heavy construction and earth moving equipment.
  • Performs the full range of welding duties when required to facilitate the repair of industrial equipment.
  • Determines the exact nature and extent of repair required and performs major and minor overhaul and repair of engines, engine accessories, power transmissions, suspension, steering and braking systems, etc.
  • Inspects and traces malfunction to isolate fault, identifies source of trouble or breakdown and estimates extent of repairs required.
  • After appointment into this position, incumbent must obtain and maintain valid Government operator's license to operate specialized construction equipment.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Maintenance Mechanic, your resume and supporting documentation must support:Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and that you have the required ability or potential to perform the job.Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:

  • Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision (SOE): Performing routine preventive maintenance and repair on a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles such as, bulldozers, road graders, front-end loaders, backhoes and similar heavy construction and earth moving equipment; referring to sketches, technical manuals, diagrams, and manufacturer's publications to complete work assignments; inspecting equipment to detect damage, pressure leaks, cleaning, corrective voltage, etc.; using electrical/electronic and mechanical equipment to inspect and repair equipment (e.g., ohmmeters, dial indicators, calipers, welder/solder devices, etc.).
Selective Placement Factor: Incumbent must possess a valid state driver's license.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort: Maintenance Mechanics work in tiring and uncomfortable positions requiring frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Often works on top and under vehicles in cramped positions; performs strenuous work. Frequently lifts and carries items weighting 40 to 50 pounds or more and often must push, pull, turn and position parts, assemblies, equipment and tools. Often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of others and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes.

Working Conditions: The Maintenance mechanic works both inside and outside and is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures and noise. He may sometimes work in areas where exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes and from hard damp floors and ground. Frequently is exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritation from acids, fluids, and lubricants. Mechanic typically works on parts and systems that are dirty, oily or greasy. At times the mechanic may be required to use protective safety devices which may be uncomfortable if used for extended periods of time. Occasionally required to work in inclement weather conditions including high winds, rain, snow and freezing temperatures.

Emergency Employee: The incumbent of this position is part of a snow removal team and has been designated as an emergency employee. The term "Emergency Employee" is used to designate those employees who must report to work in emergency situations. Emergency dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to these employees. The employees who occupy these positions may be required to report for duty in any situation that prevents significant numbers of employees in the local area from reporting for work on time or which requires agencies to close all or part of their activities.
