Federal Protective Service is hiring for law enforcement jobs that have an exciting opportunity! Once onboarded, you may be assigned for up to one year to support the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force. The law enforcement component of the D.C. Task Force is a partnership of over 20 federal and local agencies working together to make D.C. the safest city in America. The primary purpose of this position is to advance the agency's mission by strengthening the security posture of federal facilities, optimizing resource utilization, and ensuring coordinated law enforcement and protective operations across the region.

Duties performed:

  • Directs and integrates regional law enforcement and physical security operations for federally controlled facilities, exercising delegated authority over subordinate Branch Chiefs and District Commanders.
  • Formulates and implements strategic plans, budget allocations, and staffing models supporting protective services, criminal investigations, and contract guard programs.
  • Oversees comprehensive physical security and risk assessment programs, ensuring complex facilities with elevated threat profiles receive appropriate countermeasures, contract guard coverage, and law enforcement support consistent with national protection standards.
  • Serves as principal advisor to the Regional Director on high-visibility, sensitive law enforcement and security matters, representing the organization in executive-level engagements with Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and senior tenant officials to coordinate integrated protection strategies.

  • Supervisory Probationary Period: This is a supervisory position. Under provisions of the Civil Service Reform Act, first time supervisors and/or managers will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period. You may also be required to complete an appropriate supervisory training course within one year of assignment to this position.
  • Essential Personnel: This position may be designated as essential personnel. Essential personnel must be able to serve during continuity of operation events without regard to declarations of unscheduled leave or government closures due to weather, protests, and acts of terrorism or lack of funding. Failure to report for or remain in this position may result in disciplinary or adverse action in accordance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations (5 U.S.C. § 7501-7533 and 5 CFR Part 752, as applicable).

Qualifications

Specialized Experience:
GS-14: Applicant must demonstrate one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-13 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors) performing the following duties:

  • Supervising law enforcement and/or physical security personnel with delegated authority for personnel actions and performance management;
  • Reviewing physical security assessments to determine staffing and/or protective requirements;
  • Developing operational plans, budget estimates, and/or staffing strategies to support protective service missions; and
  • Providing technical law enforcement advisory services to Federal agencies.

NOTE: Your resume must explicitly indicate how you meet this requirement, otherwise you will be found ineligible.Only two page resumes will be accepted and used to make an eligibility/qualifications determination.

Additional Position Requirements:

Tour of Duty: Incumbent may be required to work overtime.

Law Enforcement: The position shall possess law enforcement authority under 40 U .S.C. § 1315, exercising such authority relating to criminal offenses to provide investigative and law enforcement services to customer agencies, Federal employees and members of the general public located and/or conducting business in government-owned or leased properties.

Mobility Agreement: This position may require the incumbent to be reassigned to a different geographic location. Accordingly, the incumbent will be required to sign a mobility agreement, which will remain in effect while assigned to this position as a criminal investigator.

Motor Vehicle Operation: Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license. Motor vehicles must be driven and managed in accordance with Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and Federal Protective Service (FPS) policies and guidance.

Travel: The incumbent will be required to travel frequently.

Firearms Requirement: The incumbent must carry firearms and maintain proficiency in their care and use in accordance with FPS policy and standards.

Lautenberg Amendment: This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence are not eligible for the position.

Pre-employment Medical Requirement: Prior to appointment the person selected for this position must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties. Also successfully pass a pre-employment medical examination (which includes, but is not limited to vision, hearing, cardiovascular and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician. This position may be subject to periodic incumbent examinations in the future.

Training Requirements: Incumbent must complete or must have previously completed an approved law enforcement training program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, or a substantially equivalent program approved by FPS in compliance with agency policies.


Time-in-Grade Requirements: Under competitive merit promotion procedures, any individual who is currently holding, or who has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under a non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet "time-in-grade" requirements (have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade of the grade for which you are applying). NOTE: All current or former Federal employees must provide a copy of their SF-50 (you may need to submit more than one), "Notice of Personnel Action" that indicates proof of status and time-in-grade eligibility. The SF-50 must include your position, title, series, grade, step, tenure (1 or 2), and type of service (Competitive or Excepted).
