Performs and participates in a variety of diagnostic inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs of associated lock and dam appurtenances.
Perform repairs and installations of hydraulic and mechanical systems, performs preventive maintenance, diagnostic maintenance inspections and rebuilds lock and dam operating systems, machinery, and related equipment at navigational facilities.
Inspect, adjust, lubricate, test, install, calibrate and/or perform major and minor repairs at regularly scheduled intervals.
Inspect, troubleshoot and/or rebuild electric motors, diesel and gasoline engines of associated equipment at the facility.
Operate mobile land plant and floating plant equipment.
Determines extent of needed repair and/or overhaul required and accomplishes the same.
Disassemble electric/hydraulic systems or subsystems thereof to determine extent of repair.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
This position meets the criteria for random drug testing under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE Pamphlet 600-1-3.
This is a Mission Essential position. A Mission Essential employee is required to report for, or remain at, work in emergency situations, and dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to him/her unless his/her supervisor instructs otherwise.
May be required to have an American Red Cross Standard First Aid card, CPR, and/or AED in good standing and/or wear a prescribed uniform based on site specific requirements.

Physical Effort: The physical effort required to perform assigned work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, bending, climbing, crouching, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds. The work also requires hand-eye coordination, working in somewhat confined spaces, hearing to detect indications of equipment problems, etc. The physical effort is normal for strenuous FWS positions and has no bearing on grade level.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside during the day and at night, as required by emergencies, on high structures over water that is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high tension electrical wires, and on scaffolds or slings. Occasionally works behind bulkhead or in tunnels below water level. Is subject to falls, drowning, electrical shocks, injury and discomfort, exposure to moving equipment, machinery, loud noises, inclement weather, and, at some locations, dangerous icy conditions. Uses safety equipment such as life vest, protective hearing devices, hard hat, hard-toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing. The working conditions are typical for strenuous FWS positions with the exception of the "water element". These types of working conditions have no bearing on the grade level of this position.
