Summary

The Social Worker Supervisor will supervise social work service professionals in assigned to the Patient Aligned Care Team and Acute Care Inpatient Unit. The incumbent will ensure those whom they supervise are aware of and adhere to all current VHA directives, and meet current Joint Commission standards, State licensure standards, and expectations of all regulating bodies. The Social Work Supervisor will carry a clinical caseload to support the Patient Aligned Care Team.

Help

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Supervising a group of employees performing work at the GS 12 levels and below, including advanced practice social workers and social work program coordinators.
  • Provides administrative, technical, and clinical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the Social Workers in the medical programs.
  • Assigns, directs, and reviews the work of subordinates in the medical programs and covers for other SW Supervisory staff or Social Work Chief as needed. Is cross trained to cover all areas within the Social Work Service.
  • Works directly with the Social Work Chief in a leadership role as part of the Social Work Professional Practice committee. Additionally attends any/all work groups or committees related to the work of the supervised areas to include Social Work Leadership meetings, team Huddles, VISN and National level meetings.
  • Observes workers' performance; demonstrates and conducts work performance critiques.
  • Provides informal feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance, working to resolve informal complaints and grievances.
  • Develop work improvement plans, recommending personnel actions as necessary.
  • Provides advice and counsel to workers related to work and administrative matters.
  • Invokes disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in the medical programs.
  • Reviews and approves or disapproves leave requests.
  • Assures that subordinates are trained and fully comply with the provisions of the safety regulations.
  • Monitors the workload of staff within the program areas assigned and forecasts the need for additional staffing. Presents identified need to the Social Work Chief for consideration.
  • Supervises employees to accomplish the work of SWS in medical programs. Exercises supervisory authorities and responsibilities involving work assignment and review, as well as the administrative and personnel management functions relative to the staff supervised.
  • Performs a wide range of services and provides technical assistance to State, local, and private agencies, and universities. Technical assistance provided to monitor activities and program reviews, and the development and analysis of information.
  • Use sound judgment in the interpretation of trends and patterns; the application of guidelines; and the recommendation of program enhancements.
  • Performs program analysis, development, review, research, design, and contact work as possible with various agencies (public, DOD, state, etc.)
  • Performs work related to the review, monitoring, analysis, planning and assessment of various programs. Responsible for key project activities related to the planning, development, and implementation of the project component.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for compliance of all performance measures assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.
  • Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to http://vaww.va.gov/OHRMff38Hybrid/.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:

GS-12 Determinations:

Education and Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration, demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.

Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines.
Knowledge of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision, consultation, negotiation with other departments and quality improvement.
Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services.
Ability to provide staff training and development.
Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
