This is a NAF position with the 17th Force Support Squadron, located at Outdoor Recreation, within the Community Services Flight on Goodfellow AFB, San Angelo, Texas.
This position is considered Flexible. The position is not guaranteed any hours, but has the potential to work up to 40 hours per week. You may be required to work some nights, weekends and holidays. As a flexible employee, you are not eligible for leave or benefits.

Help

  • Serves as the recreation specialist over the base swimming pools, lead lifeguards, Water Safety Instructors and lifeguards in the performance of lifeguard and related swimming facility duties. Distributes and balances workload in accordance with established directives. Ensures lead lifeguards manage safe pool environments and follow resource protection standards in compliance with established procedures.

  • Determines appropriate staffing patterns and recommends hours of operation. Assigns work to leads and lifeguards based on priorities and deadlines. Ensures strict adherence and precise attention to detail (e.g., water chemistry tests, facility rules of behavior, etc.) and work assignments are accomplished. Checks on work in progress and reviews completed work to ensure instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met.

  • Observes swimming areas to ensure safety of patrons. Warns swimmers of unsafe environmental or health conditions or hazards, and recommends closing swimming areas until safe conditions prevail. Assists in control of chemical additives to ensure pool water meets specified standards. Deliver necessary supplies to designated areas, as needed. Using a variety of techniques such as artificial respiration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid; rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and promptly renders first aid to injuries. When needed, calls for professional medical assistance.

  • Ensures the swimming areas are open to patrons at scheduled times and only authorized persons are admitted to the areas. Coordinates with supervisor on all scheduling needs, to include posting schedules in designated areas, ensuring schedule changes are annotated correctly and the supervisor receives any changes.

  • Ensures that water slides are inspected frequently for cracks or loose connections, and that necessary repairs are made. Maintains a current knowledge and answers questions of other employees on procedures, policies, and directives, and obtains needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems.

  • Takes initiative to resolve problems and conflicts. Collects admission fees, makes change, and completes appropriate forms. Develops, coordinates, and publicizes age-appropriate swim lessons using certified WST staff to offer classes.

  • Conducts training, to include lifeguard and WSI certification and in-service trainings throughout the season. Independently performs routine duties. May perform other related or incidental duties as assigned for the daily operation of the swimming areas to include: cleaning of bath houses, wading pools, pool decks, beach areas, sunbathing areas, etc.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Qualifying Experience:
Must have an approved current valid nationally recognized certification in lifeguarding, basic first aid, and CPR. Must have physical ability to swim and to rescue swimmers of all ages, including adults, and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants. WSI certificate is desired but not required. Must have experience which provides a practical knowledge of instructional and developmental teaching methods, swimming activities, rules and procedures and skill in the use and maintenance of various pool and safety equipment is desirable. Knowledge of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing and recurring tasks. Must be able to lift and carry 45 pounds and, occasionally, over 45 pounds with assistance. Must satisfactorily complete a preemployment physical. Must be able to satisfactorily complete installation record checks, state criminal history repository check and a Tier-1 background investigation.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
