Duties

Help

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Receive/Interpret requests for procedures.
  • Operate equipment and assist medical staff with or perform diagnostic procedures.
  • Performs a range of diagnostic support duties under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Obtain, record, and report deviations in vital signs.
  • Obtain intravenous access, collecting blood or other fluid samples utilizing proper procedure for collection, labeling, and transport of specimens.
  • Perform sterile dressing changes, applying simple support equipment such as splints, arm boards, monitoring equipment, and hot or cold packs.
  • Perform 12-lead EKG's connecting patients to cardiac and telemetry monitors and transporting patients on telemon to telemetry units.
  • Assist with patient preparation of selected diagnostic procedures by obtaining equipment and assisting patient in the correct position, e.g. chest tube insertion, liver biopsy, paracentesis, periocardiocentesis, peritoncal lavage.
  • Assist with application of orthopedic devices i.e. splints, ace wraps, immobilizer, arm sling.
  • Assist the physician under the direction of the of the Registered Nurse, with procedures involving the eyes, ears, nose, and throat. (e.g. eye irrigation, contact lens removal, nasal packing, throat culture, removal of foreign bodies)
  • Obtain appropriate tray for selected emergencies i.e. pediatric resuscitation tray, obstetric emergency tray.
  • Perform oral and/or tracheal suctioning.
  • Perform, record, and report finger stick blood glucose monitoring.
  • Assist with extrication of patent from vehicles.
  • Utilizes the emergency response vehicle (2500 lbs-Kawasaki Mule 3010 4WD ambulance to transport patients from the hospital grounds to the Emergency Department during emergencies.

  • Verbal descalation of mental health patients.

Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/27/2026.

Individual Occupational Requirement: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirement, you may qualify based on your experience as described below:

Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:

  1. Responds to On-Station emergencies and transports critical patients on VA property.
  2. Serves as the first clinical contact for incoming patients when assigned to the Triage area.
  3. Aids in the search for medical identification; provides technical support to the Emergency Department Physicians and Nurses.
  4. Observes, records and reports general and specific physical and behavioral signs and symptoms indicated of change in a patient's condition.
  5. Assist with provision of emotional and physical comfort of patients while in transport; operates and monitors applicable medical equipment related to emergency treatment.

Preferred Experience:
  • 3 years of Acute Care Hospital Experience required
  • Emergency department Experience
  • Experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (EMT-P) or military Medic
