Duties

Help
  • You will diagnose, locate, and repair malfunctions to the main operating mechanical components of large and complex heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems (HVAC) for commercial/industrial size systems.
  • You will dissemble and repair a variety of components including compressors, evaporators, condensers, cooling coils, air handlers, bearings, water control valves, air dampers, etc.
  • You will test for refrigerant leaks and use a refrigerant recovery/recycling station to Environmental Protection Agency standards.
  • You will assure that safety and housekeeping rules are followed, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • You will dismantle, repair and reassemble units such as pumps, impellers, chillers, and receivers.

  • This is a Bargaining Unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license within 10 days of appointment.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You are required to furnish basic hand tools typical of the trade. Special tools pertaining to the trade will be furnished by the organization.
  • You are required to possess a HVAC Technician Certification (Universal) as required by the by 40 CFR Part 82, Sub-part F. This is federally mandated by Executive Order 12843 dated 1952.
  • You will work on your assigned shift but are subject to recall twenty0four hours a day, seven days a week.
  • You may be required to lift and carry weights up to 100 pounds but the average weight varies between 60 to 85 pounds and is carried for short distances.
  • You must have normal vision and hearing with or without corrective devices, depth perception and the ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors to differentiate wire colors etc.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE: I have independently performed the duties of a Journeyman in the AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC LEADER trade or equivalent experience. I have performed work that includes but is not limited to: determining sequence, priorities and deadlines of scheduled assignments; estimating material, equipment and manpower needs; developing and implementing work and safety procedures; AND/OR executing operational administrative functions such as supporting Equal Employment Opportunity principles and practices.
