Duties

Help

As a Supervisory Security Specialist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of field security managers assigned to your area of responsibility
  • Evaluate existing security practices and make recommendations to correct any identified deficiencies
  • Compile, analyze, and summarize information on security requirements and practices
  • Evaluate statements of work to ensure appropriate security considerations are incorporated into plans concerning ICE facilities
  • Conduct security surveys, inspections, and compliance reviews in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, Presidential Directives, Executive Orders, interagency directives, and DHS and ICE policies
  • Maintain and coordinate staff liaison with senior-level management in DHS and ICE, other Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies, security directors of Federal and private sector agencies, and other members of the security community on matters such as demonstrations, civil disorders, terrorist and criminal activities, and provide leadership and staff resources to control such incidents occurring on DHS controlled property
  • Coordinate the review and inspection of agency facilities to ensure compliance with security standards and regulations
  • Ensure full compliance with Congressional, U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, DHS, ICE, and Enterprise Services policies, delegation orders, and general guidance

Qualifications

You must demonstrate you meet the Specialized Experience requirement as noted below.

Specialized Experience, GS-14:
You must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-13 level in the Federal service that included performing at least four of the following:

  • Writing statements of work, security regulations, supplements, policies, procedures, reports, assessments and/or evaluations.
  • Evaluating existing security practices and making recommendations to correct any identified deficiencies.
  • Conducting preliminary inquiries of actual or suspected compromise of classified, and sensitive but unclassified information.
  • Conducting security surveys, inspections, and compliance reviews in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Developing and implementing short and long-range plans to improve delivery, effectiveness, and efficiency of security field operations.
  • Evaluating the impact of new security legislation or regulations on programs, missions, and strategic plans.

Time-in-Grade Requirements: Under competitive merit promotion procedures, any individual who is currently holding, or who has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under a non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet "time-in-grade" requirements (have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade of the grade for which you are applying). Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to current employees applying for a Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. NOTE: All current or former Federal employees must provide a copy of their SF-50 (you may need to submit more than one), "Notice of Personnel Action" that indicates proof of status and time-in-grade eligibility. The SF-50 must include your position, title, series, grade, step, tenure (1 or 2), and type of service (Competitive or Excepted).

Background Investigation: To ensure the accomplishment of our mission, DHS requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy. Supervisory Probationary Period: This is a supervisory position. Under provisions of the Civil Service Reform Act, first time supervisors and/or managers will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period. You may also be required to complete an appropriate supervisory training course within one year of assignment to this position.
