Duties

Help

If selected for this position as a GS-0083-09 Supervisor Police Officer (Sergeant) your duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • The incumbent provides supervision and direction to assigned subordinate police officers within the Division of Police.
  • Responsibility for investigation, apprehension, and detention of persons suspected of offenses against all applicable criminal laws of the United States. Provides leadership and supervision to police officers and lead police officers. Supervises and leads others in investigating complaints brought by a variety of persons.
  • Responds to alarms and calls involving crimes in progress and provides command supervision and leadership to staff on the scene and others in questioning individuals to determine the extent of the emergency.
  • Acts promptly, decisively, and judiciously to analyze facts and take corrective actions that may involve decisions to make arrests or issue citations. Executes search and arrest warrants.
  • Manages crime scenes and accident scenes. Administers first aid to the injured as required.
  • Executes all incident and criminal reports in the appropriate format.
  • Assumes incident command and coordinates emergency response to critical incidents.
  • Qualifies and maintains proficiency with assigned duty weapons.
  • Performs a wide range of technical and administrative functions representing the senior management of the Division. Acts in place of the Lieutenant in their absence.
  • Uses effective communication techniques to assist employees and the public.

  • U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.
  • Employment is subject to the successful completion of the pre-appointment process (i.e., background investigation, verification of qualifications and job requirements, completion of onboarding forms, submission of required documents, etc.)
  • Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • Applicants must meet all qualifications requirements within thirty (30) calendar days of the closing date of this announcement, including time in grade.
  • If selected, you must pass a pre-employment medical examination, psychological examination, provide evidence of immunization, and be free from communicable diseases.
  • If selected, you must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle license or must be able to obtain a valid driver before a final offer of employment.
  • If selected, you must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance. Criminal history background checks are a requirement for this position.
  • If selected, may be required to use protective clothing. The selectee will be required to wear a uniform.
  • If selected, you must obtain and maintain a Contracting Officer’s representative (COR) Level 1 within one year of your appointment date and Level II within two years of appointment date.
  • This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment Gun Control Act of 1968, as amended, which prohibits access to firearms by people convicted of crimes involving domestic violence or any felonious act.
  • You must have reached your 21st birthday prior to an initial Federal Police Officer appointment.
  • If selected will be required to obtain and maintain a CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • If selected for this position, you MAY be expected to travel 12 weeks for initial entrance level training at Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). FLETC may be waived for eligible candidates.
  • If selected for this position, you MAY be expected to pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) test as determined by the Chief of Police which consist of a Sit and Reach, Bench Press, and an Agility run.
  • This is a Testing Designated Position.
  • Incumbent must submit to and successfully pass a urinalysis drug screening prior to appointment. The Incumbent will also be subject to unannounced random drug testing for the duration of their time in this position.
  • If selected, you must be able to lift and move heavy items weighing 50 lbs. with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • If selected, you must be able to work outdoors under all weather conditions.
  • This position has on-call or call-back requirements, nights, rotational shifts, weekends, and holiday hours. Overtime on an emergency basis.
  • Candidates must qualify with the authorized issued weapon once per quarter. A minimum qualifying score of 210 must be obtained at each qualification session.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-09 level, if you meet the following qualification requirement:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: 1) conducting investigations of criminal acts and other offenses; 2) responding to calls or alarms involving crimes in progress, threats, or suspicious activities; investigating, apprehending, and detaining persons suspected of criminal law offenses; 3) preparing incident and criminal reports, testimony, and evidence; and 4) managing and supervising, a civilian police force.

You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.

  • This position is designated as an "emergency essential" position and the selected candidate will be considered an "emergency essential" employee and will be required to be available, ready, willing, and able to report for duty under all circumstances (e.g., inclement weather, government closings and holidays, lapses in appropriations, non-emergency and emergency situations) for operation 24 hours a day and 365 days per year coverage.
