Clarification from the agency

(1) Arkansas Army National Guard (AR ARNG) Technicians; (2) All members of the AR ARNG, (3) Individuals who are not members of the National Guard but who are eligible to acquire membership in an available and compatible military grade for excepted technician positions. (Upon selection, must be a member of the AR Army National Guard).

Duties

Help

(1) Plans, constructs, and repairs a wide range of custom wood containers, parts, and items, of irregular shapes and sizes, in support of maintenance activities. These items include shipping crates, storage boxes, toolboxes, parts bins, dividers, automotive equipment, truck beds, special equipment cases, etc. May revise standard items to fabricate products. In addition, plans and constructs furniture braces, Formica desktops, counter tops, credenzas, bookcases, etc., where concern for final appearance of work in required.

(2) Resolves complex construction problems and uses special bracing requirements for heavy items (automotive equipment, truck beds), sensitive equipment and items (hazardous materials), delicate and sensitive electronic equipment (calibration items), etc. Utilizes shop plans, blueprints, and item specifications to develop bracing points based on weight, gravity points, method of shipment, potential for shifting or damage, etc.

(3) Plans and lays out work and materials in accordance with blueprints, drawings, and specifications; and knowledge of custom wood and wood substitute items. Measures and selects proper materials and tools. Determines the type and extent of construction or repair necessary to modify and restore standard and nonstandard containers.

(4) Sets up and uses a variety of stationary power tools to make construction features such as joints and grooves, e.g., rabbetted edge lap joints; tongue and grove and doweled edge joints; end lap joints; dado and dado rabbet grooves and joints; and locked corners. Sets up, adjusts, and adapts hand and power tools and devices to measure, cut, fit, join, and install wooden parts.

(5) Maintains and performs operator preventive maintenance on tools and equipment, to include lubrication of power tools and sharpening of saw blades.

(6) Performs other duties as assigned.

Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership in the military grade listed below. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.

Maximum Grade - E-8/ MSG

Compatible Military Assignments: Selectee must be a member of the Arkansas Army National Guard.

IMPORTANT NOTES (AS APPLICABLE): Upon selection for this position, individual must possess or initiate a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) background investigation. A favorable determination based upon investigative results is mandatory for this position. Failure to meet these requirements will result in termination of employment. A pre-placement physical is required if not already current. Upon selection, must complete mandatory Full-Time Support (FTS) Training at the Professional Education Center (PEC) within six months of assignment (if applicable, training will be coordinated by the supervisor). Individual must meet all military requirements of the position without creating a grade inversion, as determined by the Human Resources Office (HRO). Technicians will not be militarily senior to their full-time supervisor or wage leader (Grade Inversion). Enlisted members currently at a higher grade than allowed by the position (see Military Grade Requirement above) may apply; however, they must administratively reduce prior to appointment and provide confirmation of the reduction to HRO.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
WG - Experience or training which demonstrates the ability to use hand and powered tools, machines, and measuring and squaring devices to cut, nail, staple, screw, bolt or fasten wood and wood-like boards, sheets, parts, or sections.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
WG-08 - Experience or training in woodworking techniques to improvise or modify construction plans and patterns. Experience in making non-standard containers that incorporate several irregular shapes, sizes, and features. Experience in operating woodworking machines to make varied and complex construction features. Experience machining complex joints. Experience that provides a thorough knowledge of the characteristics of hard and soft woods and wood substitutes used in container construction and repair. Experience in determining the type and extent of construction or repair necessary to modify and restore standard and nonstandard containers.

  • Thorough knowledge of woodworking techniques to improvise or modify construction plans and patterns to construct custom containers and storage items from wood and wood substitute materials. Skill in making nonstandard containers that incorporate several irregular shapes, sizes, and features.
  • Skill in operating woodworking machines to make varied and complex construction features, such as, wood lathes, table saws, radial arm saws, planners, joiners, circular saw, jig saws, band saws, compound miter saws, drill presses, routers; belt, vibrating, and oscillating rotary sanders, pneumatic nail guns, staplers, grinders, and various hand tools of the trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of the characteristics of hard and soft woods and wood substitutes used in container construction and repair. Ability to determine the type and extent of construction or repair necessary to modify and restore standard and nonstandard containers.
  • Skill in bracing and making structural alterations for specialized containers. Skill in determining the weight supports of large, heavy, unbalanced, and irregularly shaped items to make and place supports to prevent such items from shifting during transit or storage.
  • Ability to read and interpret blue prints, drawings, and specifications to fabricate and/or repair required end products.
