Duties

Help
  • You will provide fire protection/prevention and emergency medical services to a region which will include structural, shipboard, aircraft, emergency medical, ambulance, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, disaster response, etc. duties.
  • You will perform regular and frequent technical fire protection/prevention inspections where the hazards and potential severity may be of a high degree and the expectancy of fire can be high.
  • You will maintain constant surveillance over numerous and frequently changing hazardous conditions.
  • You will conduct regular and frequent technical fire protection/prevention inspections on full service medical/dental facilities, base home child care programs, multi-family quarters, dormitories, offices, retail, industrial, and other facilities.
  • You will conduct regular and frequent inspections of armories, high explosive magazines, and ammunition storage areas that are utilized for the transportation of explosives and ordnance.
  • You will regularly communicate verbally and in writing with fire department operations personnel, military personnel, civilian personnel, and other parties.
  • You will inspect fire protection and water supply systems on ships and submarines during construction availabilities.
  • You will perform special hazard inspections and issue temporary permits for the performance of "hot work" (e.g., welding, brazing, roof tar kettle operations, etc.), ship refueling, and ordnance movements/loading/unloading.
  • You will inspect, test, correct, and/or cause to be corrected any/all deficiencies in a variety of fire extinguishing and reporting systems, sprinkler systems, heat detector systems, smoke detector systems, fire alarm communication systems, etc.
  • You will maintain files regarding inspections, new construction, hazards, fire load, facility occupancy and use, occupant load calculations, and other facility and fire protection data.
  • You will issue violation notices and assist in assigning Risk Management Codes to facilities.
  • You will be an expert in the use of word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word) to create reports, briefs, point papers, and correspondence with installation tenants.
  • You will liaison with Public Works to update and reconcile geographical information/data/maps to properly reflect the location of buildings, addresses, fire hydrants, and fire departments.
  • You will create, update, maintain, and/or use spreadsheets (e.g., Excel) and databases to maintain fire alarm, fire extinguisher, and other facility data.
  • You will review plans for new construction, renovations and alterations, and additions to existing structures to ensure compliance with fire and life safety codes, and you will recommend changes and modifications as needed.
  • You will develop, organize, and implement a fire and life safety education program for all levels of employees and management to increase awareness of fire safety and prevention.
  • You will provide public education classes and practical demonstrations on fire safety, industrial fire safety, life safety, home escape planning, and other topics for child care centers/schools, tenant commands, housing occupants, public events, etc.
  • You will organize, train, and oversee a fire warden program.
  • You will be called upon to support fire department operations personnel during emergency and non-emergency incidents.
  • You will perform other duties as assigned at the discretion and direction of management.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
(1) Conducting fire protection and prevention inspections;
(2) detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; and
(3) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention

GS-08: In addition to the specialized experience listed above, at the GS-08 grade level, this position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: 1) HazMat Awareness; 2) Fire Inspector I; 3) Fire Inspector II; 4) Fire Instructor I; The certifications must have been awarded by DoD, NREMT, IFSAC or Proboard to meet the requirements. If you do not possess all of the above certifications you will be rated ineligible.

GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
(1) Assist in conducting fire protection or prevention inspections.
(2) Assist with detecting potential fire hazards; and
(3) Assist with providing training in fire protection or prevention.
NOTE: This information must be fully supported in your resume to be considered for the position.
(NO DoD Certifications are required at the GS-07 level.)
