Duties

Help
  • You will serve as an ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (INNOVATION) in the INNOVATION, TECHNOLOGY AND ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING (AM) LAB (C205E) of the SOUTHEAST REGIONAL MAINTENANCE CENTER located in MAYPORT, FL.
  • You manage daily operations, drive innovation in AM, process optimization and collaborate with the DoD, local, and state organizations to advance naval surface ship technologies.
  • You provide expert guidance on material modifications, reverse engineering, and part design and advance 3D printing technologies, while preparing Technical Data Plans (TDPs) for naval vessels to ensure compliance with technical requirements.
  • You will serve as an Additive Manufacturing subject matter expert, improve processes, troubleshoot, and lead reverse engineering efforts for AM products, while overseeing high-priority engineering projects.
  • You will lead continuous process improvement initiatives, mentor team members, manage complex projects, and create/update technical documentation utilizing advanced AM skills and traveling for fieldwork and presentations as needed.

Qualifications

GS-12: In addition to the Basic Requirements, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience applying an expertise in advance engineering theories, principals, concepts, standards, and methods to apply experimental theories and/or new applications or developments to: extend or modify theories, concepts, and assumptions; resolve unique or novel problems, conditions or issues; and significantly alter standard practices, equipment, devices, processes, and known techniques.
  • Experience developing Technical Data Packages (TDPs) for new and/or improved parts for ships and applying a technical expertise in additive manufacturing.
  • Experience devising, customizing, operating, overseeing, and/or evaluating specialized information technology systems, processes, and applications pertaining to the performed work and delivery of its design end products or services.
  • Experience applying knowledge of parts prototyping plans and layouts, and an expert knowledge of AutoCAD, Solid Works applications and Slicer software.
  • Must have 5 axis Milling machine experience

  • Experience applying knowledge of proper storage of additive materials (i.e., powders builds or assembles additive manufacturing equipment devices or systems.
  • Experience acting as principal contributor on team-based projects or coordinating a team project and providing technical oversight and direction.
  • Experience providing significant and innovative recommendations for advancing programs and/or methods.
  • Must have 5 axis Milling machine experience

Education

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 or equivalent and above):
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems.

Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as:

  • Planner and estimator who analyzed designs for production purposes.
  • Instrument maker or model maker who performed design or development work on devices fabricated.

Certification:
Engineering technicians may be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, an organization sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. Certification by the Institute will be helpful as a measure of the technician's quality of experience.

Some travel is required to attend meetings, participate in training, or visit other laboratory and industrial facilities.

Most work is performed in a laboratory environment which involves low risk, but a substantial amount of time is spent in industrial shops and onboard ships where they are exposed to moderate risks or discomforts. Standing may be necessary to monitor equipment, perform laboratory testing, or observe production processes. The shipboard investigation phase of task involves considerable walking, climbing, and crawling in and around the equipment/systems with marginal accessibility being a frequent problem. Incumbent is required to lift and carry items that are light weighted, and items that are moderately heavy items that are less than 50lbs. The position requires hands-on operation of a wide variety of laboratory and production equipment.

Incumbent must be physically qualified to work safely in an industrial environment.

This position involves routine and reoccurring moderate exposure to the hazards of an industrial complex, such as heights up to 60 FT, irritant, toxic, and hazardous chemicals, high noise levels, potential dust, auto, and/or aircraft exhaust, maritime docks, high winds and low/high temperatures, noxious fumes, industrial vehicles, machinery, and moving parts. Special precautions and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and clothing such as lab coats, gloves, safety shields, respirator, safety glasses, hearing protection and steel toe shoes / boots are required.
