Summary

The Supervisory Vascular Technologist serves as the technical director of the Vascular Laboratory within the Vascular Surgery Division at Richmond VA Medical Center. This position is responsible for the comprehensive oversight, supervision, and quality assurance of non-invasive vascular diagnostic services within the Central Virginia VA Health Care System. This includes the Richmond VA Medical Center, Fredericksburg Health Care Center, and the Henrico Community Based Outpatient Clinic locations.

Duties Include:

  • Plans, organizes, and directs the daily operations of the Vascular Laboratory, including scheduling of staff, patients, and equipment to optimize workflow and minimize delays in diagnostic services for Veterans.
  • Planning and directing programs at affiliated medical centers and their satellite outpatient clinic.
  • Supervises a team of GS-5 to GS-9 Medical Instrument Technicians, providing guidance on complex vascular procedures, performance evaluations, and corrective actions as needed.
  • Coordinates recruitment, onboarding, and orientation for new technologists, including hands-on training in vascular ultrasound protocols, equipment operation, and safety procedures. Designs and delivers continuing education programs to ensure staff maintain current competencies in emerging technologies.
  • Develop written instructions, standard operating procedures, policies, protocols, and other written materials to enhance performance.
  • Manages laboratory resources, including inventory of ultrasound transducers, gels, and supplies; prepares budgets and justifications for equipment purchases or upgrades; and ensures compliance with VA Directive 5005 (Staffing) and Joint Commission standards.
  • Independently performs and interprets advanced non-invasive vascular ultrasound examinations on adult and geriatric Veterans.
  • Assists in invasive procedures, such as ultrasound-guided vascular access, biopsies, or fluid aspirations, determining optimal needle angles, depths, and lesion locations in collaboration with vascular surgeons.
  • Adapts protocols for challenging cases, such as patients with obesity, wounds, or mobility limitations, while ensuring patient safety and comfort through effective communication and positioning techniques.


Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 7:00am- 3:30pm; hours may vary; weekends may be needed for coverage of clinic.

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d)
  • Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation.
  • Licensure or Certification: Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) is highly desirable.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are desirable.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: In addition to the core competencies defined at the GS-9 level, positions at this grade may be supervisory or non-supervisory with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs :
  1. Advanced knowledge of the most complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques.
  2. Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program.
  3. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations.
  4. Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget.
  5. Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions.

Preferred Experience: The ideal Candidatewill have 10 plus years of clinical experience as a Vascular Technician including supervisory experience. The selected individual must be willing to travel to HCC and CBOCs. Preference will also be given to candidates who possess.
  1. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  2. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  3. Registered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) as RVT (Please provide license)

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-10.
