Duties

Help

  • Conducts maintenance and repair of all athletic and fitness facilities equipment
  • Develops and monitors a comprehensive training program. Ensures all staff and volunteer employees are trained in educating and demonstrating to customers how to properly utilize athletic and fitness equipment
  • Assists in preparation of appropriated funds budget for equipment and supplies required to conduct the fitness and recreational programs
  • Assists in developing an annual fitness plan. Plans and coordinates recurring and non-recurring activities, special events, and joint military and civilian community undertakings to make maximum use of facilities and services

  • Incumbent is subject to work an uncommon tour of duty to meet program requirements including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • May be required to travel by military or commercial aircraft when performing temporary duty (TDY)
  • Requires the operation of personal or government vehicles. A valid driver’s license is required
  • Requires physical dexterity and ability; heavy physical exertion (lifting up to 75 pounds); and exposure to cleaning materials; oil, grease, and other like materials. A physical examination is required
  • A bachelor’s degree in fitness, sports, or recreation-related field or equivalent years of experience is highly desirable
  • Must complete all mandatory training IAW AFI 34-114, Air Force Fitness and Sports Programs
  • This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing
  • Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, 0189 Series.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-5, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience include knowledge of a wide range of the principles, concepts, and techniques of physical fitness programs including knowledge of exercise science, strength conditioning, nutrition, weight loss/control, cardiovascular endurance, and exercise prescription; of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology as related to exercise and physical fitness; assessment principles and procedures, and exercise testing equipment. Knowledge of program and facilities management, safety, fire, and environmental regulations, practices, and procedures, as well as facility design and equipment selection and purchase.

EDUCATION: Successfully completed one full year of graduate education with a major study in recreation or physical education; (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts.

OR

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Less than the full amount of specialized experience described; however, have also completed 6 months of graduate education which is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements as described. Therefore, a combination of experience and education. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-inĀ­-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-5 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-6 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of a wide range of the principles, concepts, and operating characteristics of athletic/fitness/sports related equipment. Must be familiar with basic design, wiring diagrams, specifications and schematics, as well as electrical motors and mechanical parts
  • Ability to perform and conduct training on maintenance of athletic/fitness equipment
  • Practical knowledge of physical fitness/recreation programs including strength conditioning, and cardiovascular endurance
  • Skill in communicating effectively with others both orally and in writing, with the ability to demonstrate the use and proper exercise techniques for cardiovascular and resistance equipment
  • Ability to prepare budgets and program evaluations; and assist in administration of financial and physical resources of fitness and recreation programs

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
