Summary

The Primary Purpose of the Position is to operate commercial-type laundry washers, extractors, tumblers, or conditioners. The work includes loading, unloading, and operating controls of machines to wash, dye, starch, rough dry, or condition items for pressing.

The Organizational Location of the Position is in the Laundry Section, Environmental Management Service (EMS), at the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS).

Incumbent operates commercial-type washer extractors, three (3) 125 - pound capacity conventional washers, three (3) 120 - pound capacity gas dryers, two (2) 600 - pound capacity washer extractors., one (1) 400 - pound capacity gas dryer, two (2) continuous batch washers with seven (7) gas tunnel designated gas dryers, two (2) 8-module tunnel systems, overhead railing system, and soil sort system with railing, which are usually in operation simultaneously processing various categories of textiles.

Incumbent uses soiled and clean linen holding systems utilizing weighed carts, or sorted linen in bags, queued to the tunnels, and soil stations, as well as loading and unloading the conventional washers by hand. Incumbent loads machines to the related load capacities. Programs computer micro-processors which are necessary for various classifications utilized. Uses proper formula programs based on classification and degree of soiling. Performs inspections to ensure proper classification is selected to remove stains from stained categorized linen. Maintains written records of work productivity, chemical usage, and incoming weight for reporting purposes.

May train other machine operators in the correct procedures of washer/extractor operation and washing formulary and use. Loads and unloads washers and dryers. Keeps employee uniforms separated and designates which using area they are to be returned to. Incumbent keeps apparel worn by patients grouped for routing to the proper using area.

Incumbent also operates conveyors from the tunnel designated dryers, which they empty into carted slings, and then place on a lift to the overhead railing system which is routed to the proper area for finishing.

The incumbent must be able to comprehend all written and oral instructions. Incumbent is trained to fill in for other positions within the unit when staffing or workload requires.

Incumbent is trained in the safe operation of all laundry related equipment. Incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of washing techniques and formulary for processing soiled textiles and clothing. Incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of the basic chemistry in the chemicals used for washing, chemicals used for stain removal and their effect on textile items.

Incumbent must understand the effect of water temperatures, water levels and timing of cycles for various fabrics processed in a textile care setting. Must always have thorough knowledge of and be able to apply titration procedures to ensure a proper pH value. Must possess a thorough knowledge of the textile Care equipment in use to know its function, its limitations, its proper uses and its capacities to maximize the use of the equipment to know when it may be malfunctioning and to teach others how to use it. Incumbent must know the proper time and temperature setting for the drying and conditioning of different types of fabrics in the dryer/tumblers.

After initial orientation and training are provided, incumbent will carry out a series of repetitive tasks in relatively independent mode. Must work according to set procedures for operating textile care equipment, such as selecting appropriate wash formulas based on the degree of soil, load size, and wash ability of fabrics; setting time and temperature controls determined but the moisture retention and type of fabric; setting time and temperature controls determined by the moisture retention and type of fabrics being dried or conditioned. Is responsible for processing work according to priority to assure an efficient flow to meet quality and quantity production requirements.

Incumbent is responsible for testing and recording of chemicals and for making frequent checks on linen to ensure the proper pH level is being maintained. Responsible for instructing lower level graded Laundry Machine Operators on how to operate the machines. Incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Laundry Supervisor and general supervision of the Supervisory Laundry Operations Specialist, aka Textile Care Manager (TCM), aka Laundry Plant Manager (LPM). Incumbent performs with minimal supervision after receiving initial instructions.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent needs strength and stamina for performing heavy tasks for long periods of time. Must pull wet, compacted linen from washer/extractors. The nature of the work requires standing for long periods of time, reaching, stretching, and lifting on a regular basis throughout the day. Good reflexes and hand-eye coordination are required for safe cart handling in congested areas. Incumbent is required to move heavily loaded carts by pushing or pulling on flat surfaces as well as gradual inclines. Soiled linen bags may weigh up to 75 pounds and incumbent should seek assistance in lifting bags over 50 pounds. Incumbent is required to wear personal protective equipment provided to minimize the chance of injury; following safety procedures as taught for the handling of heavy items. Good eyesight and good field of vision is important with or without glasses to safely move carts weighing hundreds of pounds, standing over 5 feet tall and 5 feet long. Incumbent is alert at all times to avoid unsafe acts and prevent injuries to employees and/or visitors and patients.
