Clinical responsibilities as assigned by Chief of Psychology:
  • Provides a full range of psychological assessment services and diagnoses mental disorders, for veterans enrolled in the pain clinic.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply advanced professional psychological theories and techniques to the full range of patient populations.
  • Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health including pain management.
  • Knowledge of clinical research literature relevant to psychological management of pain related conditions.
  • Performs psychological evaluations for patients receiving treatment for pain and other conditions.
  • Provides fullrange of therapeutic interventions including: EBP and other models of clinical service provision for patients diagnosed with pain conditions.
  • Consults with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues.
  • Independently provides psychological services at all levels of complexity and consults with peers and supervisors as appropriate.
Administrative responsibilities as assigned by Chief of Psychology:
  • Assists in the design, development, and implementation of clinical activities within the MH&BS and Pain Clinic to include program development.
  • Adheres to operational policies and procedures established for the Pain Clinic, MH&BS and Psychology Section.
  • Assists in the execution of on-going program evaluation and data-driven quality improvement projects to monitor the effectiveness of the clinical program.
  • Complies with CPRS documentation procedures, including timeliness standards for documentation (e.g. closing out encounters according to MH&BS and WPB VAMC policies). Completes clinical reminders in a timely manner and according to MH&BS and WPB VAMC policies.
  • Attends and participates in administrative and informational meetings held by the Pain Clinic, Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Service Chief, and the Chief of Staff.
  • Attends regular Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Service Staff meetings, medical staff meetings, and complies with Psychology peer review procedures.
  • Serves on Medical Center or Healthcare System, VISN, and/or National VA committees or task forces, including participation in assigned RCA committee activities as needed.
  • Represents the Medical Center at professional/program community group/events and committees. May be called upon to participate in "Outreach" programs to veterans in the community.
Teaching and Training:
  • May be called upon to provide clinical supervision and instruction for psychology practicum students, psychology interns and/or psychology residents as needed.
  • Program Evaluation/Research:
    • May be called upon to participate in program evaluation and research activities.
    • Assists in preparation of RFPs and grant proposals, as assigned
    • All other duties as assigned by Chief or Designee.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship
  • Education: (1) Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed. AND (2) Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA. Exceptions: (1) new VHA psychology internship programs that are in the process of applying for APA accreditation are acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement, provided that such programs were sanctioned by the VHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology and the VHA Central Office of Academic Affiliations at the time that the individual was an intern and (2) VHA facilities who offered full one-year pre-doctoral internships prior to PL 96-151 (pre-1979) are considered to be acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement.
  • Licensure: Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia
  • English Language Proficiency: Psychologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.

Staff psychologists at this level diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders, and may conduct research. They may be assigned to any program area.

Staff Psychologist, GS-11 (Entry Level)

Experience. None beyond the basic requirements.
Assignment. Staff psychologists at this level diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of 5 modalities, provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders, and may conduct research. They may be assigned to any program area. Psychologists who are not licensed must practice under the close supervision of a licensed psychologist.

Staff Psychologist, GS-12 (Developmental Level)

Experience. At least one year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11). Psychologists who are not licensed must practice under the supervision of a licensed psychologist but with less intense supervision than at the GS-11 grade level.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
1. Knowledge of and ability to apply a wide range of professional psychological treatments or assessment methods to a variety of patient populations.
2. Ability to design and implement effective treatment strategies.
3. Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures.
4. Ability to conduct research activities, such as designing and implementing clinical research projects (staff psychologists with specified research job duties).
5. Ability to perform basic research tasks of scholarship and research execution within the context of an established research team, including research participant relations, research documentation, data acquisition, maintenance, and collaboration.

Assignment. Staff psychologists at this level diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders, and may conduct research. They may be assigned to any program area.

Staff Psychologist, GS-13 (Full Performance, Level)

Experience. At least two years of experience as a professional psychologist, with at least one year equivalent to the GS-12 grade level.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities;
  1. Knowledge of, and ability to apply, professional psychological treatments to the full range of patient populations.
  2. Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health.
  3. Knowledge of clinical research literature.
This announcement range is GS-11 to full performance level GS-13.
