Duties

Help
  • Perform and lead interior design efforts involved with the design, construction and life-cycle maintenance of military installations and facilities.
  • Serve as Chief Interior Designer, technical consultant and advisor to the Division Chief, other branch chiefs, Architect-Engineer (A-E) contractors and construction agencies.
  • Support a variety of complex, long-term projects which involve state-of-the-art interior designs and complex furniture, fixture and equipment (FFE) package development.
  • Identify areas requiring research and development in interior design and finishes.
  • Establish and interprets design criteria for the A-E contractors and furnishes advice as to policies, technical procedures and priorities.
  • Review and approve decisions regarding criteria, designs, specifications, and special reports and studies prepared by A-E contractors to ensure compliance with program requirements.
  • Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates.
  • Find and implement ways to eliminate or reduce significant bottlenecks and barriers to production, promote team building, or improve business practices.

  • Incumbent must have the ability to obtain and maintain National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) and/or Registered Interior Designer.

  • Confidential Financial Disclosure Reports) upon entering the position and annually, in accordance with DoD Directive 5500-7-R, Joint Ethics Regulation, dated 17-Nov-2011.
  • Position may be subject to completion of a one-year supervisory probation period.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- interior design or other field that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in interior design, interior architecture, or interior environmental design; or passage of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination.

OR

Specialized Experience: Experience that required the performance of work concerned with the design and alteration of interior spaces to meet functional and aesthetic needs such as: Identifying, researching, and creatively solving problems pertaining to the function and quality of the interior environment; Performing services relative to interior spaces, including programming, design analysis, space planning and aesthetics, using specialized knowledge of interior construction, building systems and components, building codes, equipment, materials, and furnishings; Preparing drawings and documents relative to the design of interior spaces in order to enhance and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public; Coordinating and integrating the mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering disciplines within the interior context; Managing projects, developing cost estimates, evaluating bid proposals, reviewing construction documents, participating in on-site construction visits, conducting pre- and post-occupancy evaluations, developing standards for efficient space management, etc.

In addition to the above, you must also meet specialized experience below:

Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:1) Managing design program plans and objectives for projects related to interior design functions for a variety of facilities; 2) Overseeing interior design projects that include furniture acquisition, medical facilities, and construction; and 3) Planning the work to be accomplished by subordinates to meet mission requirements and deadlines. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-13).
