Help

The Supervisory Health and Wellness Coach serves as the subject matter expert and demonstrates an ability to provide consultation around health and wellness coaching to healthcare practitioners and other groups. They develop local program proposals that encompass short- and long-term goals of the local coaching program. The Health and Wellness Coach Supervisor also develops, evaluates, and modifies the organization and management of the local program to achieve program goals.

Functions of the Supervisory Health and Wellness Coach includes, but is not limited to:

  • Provides health coaching to individuals or groups in outpatient and inpatient settings using multiple formats (face-to-face, telephone, virtual, etc.) in order to increase/promote a positive lifestyle.
  • Support Veterans in fostering internal strengths and external resources to develop self-directed strategies for making personalized, sustainable, healthy lifestyle behavior changes and more effectively manage chronic disease.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary clinical and non-clinical staff and teams throughout the VA health care system on a Veteran-centered process to facilitate and empower Veterans to develop and achieve self-determining goals related to health and well-being and that align with what matters most or their mission, aspiration, or purpose.
  • Utilizes motivational interviewing, coaching theories, and coaching techniques to assist clients in accomplishing their action steps and goals.
  • Within the coaching process, addresses appropriate social and structural determinants of health.
  • Provides education around health and wellness coaching services, evidence, and research.
  • Follows national office of Patient Centered Care and Cultural Transformation guidance and VHA policy relevant to health and wellness coaching.
  • Manages and supervises all aspects of Health and Wellness Coaching operations including but not limited to recruitment, hiring, onboarding, practice, program management, education, human resource management and supervision.
  • Develops long-range program strategic plans, goals, objectives and milestones and evaluate the effectiveness of the facility Health and Wellness Coaching program.
  • Evaluates employee training needs and provide training and troubleshooting for health and wellness coaches in health coaching, administrative processes and associated support issues.
  • Reviews work during and after completion to evaluate the adequacy of methods, procedures and results; ability to apply skills and knowledge to routine and nonroutine assignments; and adherence to basic policy and instructions.
  • Networks with internal leadership and external organizations (including local voluntary agencies, state and local health agencies, support groups and educational institutions) to exchanges information regarding health coaching programs and services.
  • Assign work based on priorities, difficulty and requirements of the assignment while taking subordinates' capabilities into consideration.
  • Maintains responsibility for all personnel action including promotion and reassignments.
  • Maintains program and administrative reference materials, project files and relevant background documents and distribute/make these items available as appropriate.
  • May serve on various facility strategic planning and management committees.
  • Develops and publishes local health and wellness coaching policies and procedures as needed.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. Health and Wellness Coach candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403 (f).
  • Education and/or Experience:
    • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in behavioral or social science or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR,
    • Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR,
    • Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
  • Certification.-Documentation Submitted Candidates must be currently certified by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC).
Loss of Credential. Management officials, in collaboration with HR office staff, must immediately relieve employees who fail to maintain the required certification of the duties and responsibilities associated with this occupation, which may also result in separation from employment.

Grade Determinations Supervisory Health and Wellness Coach, GS-11
  • Experience. One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade, (GS-09), is required. Examples of GS-09 grade level experience includes but is not limited to: (1) use of behavioral change theories (e.g., motivational interview and transtheoretical model) and tools to assist individuals in the process of health coaching; (2) provide interventions that promote health and wellness and enhance well-being (i.e., what matters to the individual), improve health related outcomes, reduce likelihood of inpatient admission and improve quality of life across the continuum of care in all settings; foster an environment that equips and empowers each individual to develop and fully engage in a lifestyle management plan; (3) facilitate the development of personalized health plans that emphasize self-care in combination with conventional treatment plans that include individualized intervention strategies to help the client use existing skills and develop new ones to enhance success; (4) provide information on the relationship between lifestyle and health outcomes, exploring behaviors that increase the risk of developing or worsening chronic disease and those that reduce the likelihood of chronic illness; (5) responsible for guiding individuals to learn about available support tools and resources outside of healthcare (e.g., social determinants of health) in the community that assist in attainment of goals; (6) develop and distribute locally approved health education materials based on national guidance to patients and family members that are in line with the patient's personalized health plan; (7) coordinate care with patients' treatment providers including primary care, specialty care and mental health to ensure identified goals are aligned with the overall plan of care around what matters most to the individual; (8) provide health coaching support to multidisciplinary groups whose purpose is to address specific health and well-being goals or metrics in both the inpatient and outpatient setting; and (9) develop individualized health and wellness group curriculum and/or provide input into curriculum developed by higher-level management.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSAs). In addition to meeting the experience above for this grade level, the candidate must fully demonstrate the following KSAs:
    • Knowledge of interdisciplinary issues and organizational structure to serve as liaison between the Health Coaching program and other internal/external programs that affect coordination of care, healthcare access, program evaluation, as well as assessment and planning for future needs.
    • Ability to perform the full range of supervisory duties, which include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed, competency assessments, performance evaluations, selection of staff and recommendation of awards, advancements and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions.
    • Ability to mentor and train Health and Wellness Coaches to ensure competency in performance of Health and Wellness Coach-related duties, activities and tasks.
    • Ability to address and resolve complex and unique patient and/or employee complaints and/or concerns.
    • Ability to determine the continuing education needs of staff and appropriate resources to meet those needs.

Preferred Experience:
  • 2 years of experience as Health and Wellness Coach Mentor.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
