Duties

Help

This position is located in an Air National Guard Wing, Operations Group, Special Operations Squadron. This is an Air National Guard dual status technician position requiring military membership, compatible military skill assignment and classification. The primary purpose of this position is to perform Weapon Systems Specialist (Instructor) duties, under the organizational title of Instructor Combat Systems Operator (ICSO) and navigator duties. The position provides a full range of instruction to student CSOs, student pilots, qualified CSOs, qualified pilots, aircraft commander upgrade pilots, instructor upgrade CSOs, instructor upgrade pilots, flight examiners, and Foreign Nationals (FN) in unit-type equipped aircraft.

  • Special Operation ICSO
    • Manages all Special Operations Schoolhouse training scenarios that require extensive coordination between Mission Rehearsal Team (MRT) ground party, Tactical Operations Center (TOC) support, other airborne assets, and the Special Operations crew.
    • b. Performs ICSO and navigator duties and provides a full range of ground and airborne flight instruction to active duty Air Force, joint service members, foreign nationals, and contractor personnel. Training involves formal classroom, briefing, debriefing instruction, and actual flight instruction of pilots and CSOs. Tasks include wartime and peacetime day, night, and night vision assisted missions.
    • c. Instructs, evaluates or performs combat tactics, sensor employment, operational procedures of special operations forces, computer architecture and networking, computer software applications, data links, cryptological operations, C2 operations, multiple communications devices, airstack operations, coalition aircraft capabilities, and pilot/CSO cockpit-specific switches/checklists.
    • d. Instructs CSOs in mission systems that are uniquely accessible to the CSOs, and all other crew members in maximizing optimal deployment of the aircraft and sensitive mission critical systems. Describes, in an unclassified manner, the "instruction" and evaluations of complex systems, tasks, procedures, and equipment relevant to this duty.
  • MRT Ground Party Safety
    • Constructs, presents, evaluates, briefs, executes and monitors complex friendly and hostile forces training scenarios to ensure dynamic team interaction and maximize safety of the MRT ground party.
    • b. Directs the safe execution of the ground team via multiple secure radios while also instructing the student CSOs and pilots; and tasking/assigning/simulating other air assets in the Restricted Operation Zone.
    • Monitors And Evaluates Student Progress, Performance And Flight SafetyInstills flight safety in all aspects of instruction with frequent checks on student performance and course objectives. Tailors teaching approaches and techniques to support students' needs. Observes student classroom activities and participation. Evaluates student performance in achieving objectives, discusses performance levels with each student, and counsels individuals on their attainment of specified standards or to identify and resolve problems. Administers measurement devices, provides feedback, recommends special study options for students when needed, and identifies outstanding performance for special recognition.
  • Mission Commander
    • May serve as mission commander when assigned aircraft are participating in deployment, redeployment, or employment operations during exercises, contingencies, joint training, unilateral tactical training, and other fighter/bomber/drone operations specified in implementing directives. May also command from a ground location such as a Command Post or Operations Center. Takes action to ensure successful mission accomplishments.
  • Flight CSO - Flying Missions
    • Navigates currently assigned special operations aircraft on tactical, search and rescue, or weather missions over land and sea. Performs in-flight navigation and mission equipment checks on unit assigned aircraft. Tasks may include wartime and peacetime day, night, and night vision assisted missions executing combat tactics and employment in all types of weather conditions including flight in mountainous terrain, threat systems engagement and avoidance, aerial reconnaissance, forward air control (aircraft), air-to-air and air-to-ground combat tactics, Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), and remote landing sites.

  • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.

  • Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.

  • The incumbent of this position description must have, at a minimum, a completed National Agency Check (NAC) prior to position assignment.
  • This position requires military membership, compatible unit and AFSC assignments, and the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI)
  • Must be mission-ready qualified as a Crew Commander in the Counter-Communication System and able to direct an operations crew in providing non-kinetic effects.

Qualifications

Military Grades: Officer (O-3 to O-4)

Compatible Military Assignments: AFSC: 12H3J

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have at least 36 months experience, education or training that required obtaining information on type of mission, weather, and intelligence data, and special instructions; experience preparing navigation flight plans; experience that provided a knowledge of proper readings and operations of navigational systems. Validated ability to test and inspect the operation of compasses, navigation systems, or radio and radar equipment; experience utilizing various navigational methods and aids to accomplish flying missions. Experience computing the effect of various factors during flight to establish present course and project balance of course and ability to train, evaluate and certify proficiency and competency of lower graded personnel. A current and qualified instructor combat systems officer in the H/MC-130J is required. Conversion to HC-130J will be required if only MC-130J qualified.

Relocation Incentive: An authorized management official approves a relocation incentives paid in accordance with this volume to a current federal employee who must relocate, without a break in service, to accept a position in a different geographic area. Employee must establish a new residence in the new geographical area and maintain residency for the duration of service agreement. Employee must have a current and "Fully Successful" performance appraisal immediately prior to the move.
