Duties

Help

  • Serves as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist to senior leadership on physical human performance and musculoskeletal injury prevention program development and sustainment.
  • Assesses, develops and implements initiatives to mitigate physical and ergonomic stressors and optimize airman performance.
  • Provides consultation, education, and training to military commanders/senior leaders, physical training (PT) leaders and medical staff on PT, fitness, and musculoskeletal injury prevention.
  • Develops and establishes a culture of discipline, character, and mental resiliency within the individual airmen and each group, combined with a scientific training program that maximizes power, speed, agility, mobility, strength, to reduce injuries in Airmen.

  • Depending on the type of position (competitive/excepted) you are selected for, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period.
  • Upon completion of your probationary/trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
  • At a minimum, qualification requirements stipulated by the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for the GS-0601 occupational series must be met.
  • Incumbent is required to have and maintain at least one of the following certifications: a) National Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA): Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).
  • b). National Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA): Certified Performance and Sport Scientist (CPSS).
  • c.) American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM): Certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-EP).
  • d) American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM): Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP).
  • e.) Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA): Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC).
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university program in exercise science, exercise physiology, kinesiology, strength and conditioning, or related field. A master’s degree is highly desired.
  • Must possess and maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • May be required to work extended hours or rotating shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use. This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Testing Program
  • Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.
  • Incumbent of this position is subject to the possibility of a random drug testing.
  • A pre-employment physical examination will be required.

Qualifications

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT CONTINUE

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions, for General Medical and Healthcare Series 0601 to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR).

BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Successfully completed a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of a Strength and Conditioning Specialist. This degree was received from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts with your application.


In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:


SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-11, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of the principles, concepts and methodology as set forth by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) within their Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Certification (CSCS) or the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) gained as a certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist or Exercise Physiologist in order to assess/analyze individuals to determine effective programs of physical fitness, promote health, and ensure safety during participation in exercise; Knowledge of military concepts in the development of comprehensive human performance program while centering on injury prevention, performance enhancement, and nutritional guidance; Knowledge of instructional systems development and learning theory, teaching techniques and of mission and operation tactical concepts relevant to planning, delivering, and evaluating performance-based strength and conditioning programs; Knowledge of governing fitness and PT programs, strength and conditioning techniques and principles, including core strength/stability, energy system development, multidirectional strength and power development, plyometric, and balance and nutrition, anatomy, medical terminology and procedures; Knowledge and ability to administer health screening and fitness assessments, exercise prescription, progressive individual fitness programs, and to demonstrate proper exercise techniques.


FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Professional knowledge of planning, implementation, and assessment techniques and principles as they apply to the strength and conditioning/human performance programming and education sufficient to serve as training resource advisor/consultant.
2. Knowledge of operational concepts and missions sufficient to understand, plan, deliver and evaluate/analyze physical requirements and how strength and conditioning impact mission accomplishment.
3. Knowledge of medical conditions and terminology as well as of human behavior change theories, motivational strategies, and counseling techniques to resolve the most difficult problems associated with uncooperative or unmotivated airmen necessary for rehabilitation.
4. Knowledge and skill in using of state-of-the-art computer-based software and other instructional/evaluative material, current and highly specialized strength and conditioning equipment, facility recommendations and practices, training aids and devices applicable to program objectives, training effectiveness, and efficiency.
5. Skill in data analysis, fact finding, problem analysis, problem resolutions, and development of concrete action plans to solve problems.
6. Ability to administer health screening and fitness assessments, exercise prescription, progressive individual fitness programs, and to demonstrate proper exercise techniques.


PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
