Summary

Journeyman Maintenance Mechanic performs multi-trade building maintenance at NIST's Boulder campus. Duties include carpentry, painting, plumbing, minor electrical repairs, and flooring and ceiling system maintenance. Incumbent interprets instructions, uses measuring instruments and specialized tools, and works independently with minimal supervision. Position also supports snow removal and emergency response as needed.

Duties

Help

In this position, you will:

- Construct, alter, modify or repair a wide range of features in buildings and other facilities.
- Construct storage areas, workrooms, and offices within existing buildings including framework, rafters, joints, insulation, sheet rock, paneling, doors, windows, cabinets, countertops, flooring, interior and exterior stairs, siding, roofing, as well as interior and exterior trim.
- Install floor coverings such as tile, linoleum, and carpet.
- Operate various carpentry equipment and tools such as routers, band and scroll saws, drill presses, clippers, joiners, shapers, sanders, powered nail guns, etc., and is able to produce finished products with precise fit, accurate dimensions, with an acceptable appearance.
-Perform painting duties with little oversight and/or review of work during progress or upon completion on a variety of interior and exterior surfaces.
- Apply various finishes such as the following: oil and water-based paint, varnishing, lacquers, etc., be able to color match through tinting and toning of paint.
- Install, modify, and repair new and existing utility supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems.
- Connect pipe sections using fittings, soldering, brazing, welding and other modern means.
- Install traps, vents, drains, siphons, pumps integral to plumbing system, meters, fittings, couplings, shock arrestors, and other fittings to pipe sections.
- Determine condition of connections and makes repairs or corrections and/or adjusts connections and pipe circuitry to correct such conditions as air lock, water hammer, expansion, contraction and friction.
- Repair or replace electrical outlets, switches, switch plates, fuses and bulbs.
- Troubleshoot, locate, and make basic repairs of electrical wiring/controls/equipment/fixtures and electrical systems in facilities.
- Assist with site snow removal during winter operations which can include operating snow blowers, plows, heavy equipment and shovels to clear site walkways, parking lots and building entrances. Snow removal duties can be assigned out of hours or during normal business hours as the weather events occur.

Qualifications

There is no specific length or level of experience requirements. The applicant's overall background of experience, education and training must clearly demonstrate the ability to perform maintenance mechanic worker duties, such as maintaining building plumbing systems, interior and exterior doors, floor repairs/replacements, ceiling grid repairs/replacements and office painting without more than normal supervision. Applicants must have experience in carpentry and plumbing.
