Duties

Help
  • You will perform hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations individually or as part of a team.
  • You will assess work practices to identify the population at risk and to detect violations of published health standards.
  • You will evaluate the need for quantitative assessment of air contamination, noise and other physical stressors as well as the quantitative assessment of ventilation systems.
  • You will maintain, calibrate and select appropriate equipment and media and conduct and oversees samplings.
  • You will provide consultation and advice to activities on occupational health problems and concerns, when requested.
  • You will present oral briefs, if requested, and provide detailed written reports of Industrial Hygiene survey findings including hazards identified, assessment of the hazards, exposure monitoring required and controls recommended.

  • Work involves conducting investigations and surveys at a wide range of industrial complexes which require moderate physical exertion such as carrying equipment, standing, walking, bending, climbing and other related movements.

Qualifications

ALL APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:

The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; (Your transcripts must be attached.) Failure to submit a copy of your transcripts with your application will result in an ineligible rating. OR
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene;.(Your transcripts must be attached.) Failure to submit a copy of your transcripts with your application will result in an ineligible rating. OR
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH). (A copy of your license or registration must be attached) Failure to submit a copy of your license or registration with your application will result in an ineligible rating.
Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.


In addition to meeting the BASIC REQUIREMENT: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-11) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Conducting industrial hygiene inspections of workplace environments to assess work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to the health and safety of workers, and to detect violations of published health standards; 2) Drafting and interpreting industrial hygiene policy and guidance for occupational health and safety professionals; 3) Calibrating and using industrial hygiene measurement equipment such as personal sampling pumps, sound level meters, noise dosimeters, and other direct reading instruments to evaluate environmental stressors; AND 4) Providing professionally written industrial hygiene reports with recommendations to eliminate or reduce chemical and physical stressors within work environments.
