Duties

Help

Provides instruction in the following Water Safety Courses: Infant and Preschool Aquatics Program (IPAP), Water Exploration, Primary Skills, Stoke Readiness, Stroke Development, Stroke Refinement, Skill Proficiency, Advanced Skills, Community Water Safety, Basic Water Rescue, and Water Safety Instructor Aide. Teach all skill, to include water adjustment, buoyancy and breath control, water enter and exit, locomotion, turns, and personal safety and rescues, that are pertinent to each course. Be familiar with course materials and know how to use them effectively. Plan, coordinate, and manage courses in conjunction with the local Red Cross unit and with 18 FSS. Create a non-threatening environment to encourage participants to meet course objectives and individual goals. Customizes and adapt teaching approaches to the experience and abilities of the participants, and be creative and flexible by including fitness components, games, and water activities when presenting material to optimize effectiveness. Provide for health and safety of participants by making sure that all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards and the materials and equipment are safe. Organize the class environment to enhance individual and group performance and to minimize distractions. Keep patrons informed on established rules and procedures for safe swimming when working at pools. Ensures the swimming area is open to patrons at scheduled times and only authorized persons are admitted to the area. Warns swimmers of unsafe environment or health conditions or hazards, and recommends closing swimming area until safe conditions prevail. Works in swimming pool environment where Lifeguards are present to perform lifesaving activity. May assist Lifeguards with continuous observation of swimming area to ensure the safety of patrons. Rescues swimmers in trouble, promptly administers first aid, and calls for medical assistance if and when needed. Responsible for filling out accident forms according to established guidelines and time frames. May also assist in inspecting pools for safe conditions, and perform other duties as assigned for the daily operation of the swimming pool to include but not limited to; cleaning of bath houses, wading pools, main pools, and pool decks. May be scheduled to work any of the swimming facilities under 18 FSS (Hagerstorm and Fairchild Pool). Alerts supervisor to problems with equipment, facility, lack of supplies, and patron complaints. Responsible for ensuring completion of accident reports, according to established guidelines and time frame. Ensure course records and addendum are completed and turned in a timely manner. Performs other duties as assigned.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Qualifying Experience:

Minimum age requirement is 17. Must have experience in teaching or instructing a group or class. Experience which provides practical knowledge of instructional and development teaching methods, swimming activities, rules, and procedures and skill in the use and maintenance of various pool and safety equipment is highly desirable. CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Must have current Red Cross Lifeguard; First Aid, CPR, and AED Certificate and Water Safety Instructor Course. Current Fundamentals of Instructor Training Certificate or equivalent is highly desirable.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution in order to qualify.
