Guaranteed 20 hours per week but can work up to 40 hours per week.

Duties

Help

  • Maintains kitchen and kitchen equipment in compliance with established health and sanitation regulations to include cleaning appliances, counters, sinks, walls and floors. Breaks down food service carts and disposes of waste and non-storable food items after each meal, or as needed during preparation. Washes dishes, silverware, cooking utensils, glasses and pans after each meal using both manual methods and automatic dishwasher/sanitizer. Utilizes proper methods for refrigerators and other large appliances according to established schedules and health/sanitation methods.
  • Provides assistance to the Cook and Cook Supervisor regarding food preparation by peeling, chopping, grinding, paring, cutting, slicing, dicing, pureeing, dredging, flouring or breading; weighs, measures and assembles ingredients for regular and special dietary menu items. On a regular basis, prepares uncooked food items. Using correct measuring utensils and/or portion control scales, portions foods IAW USDA Food Program for distribution and meal service, and covers, dates and stores leftovers according to established procedures. Places cooked food in serving dishes and sets up food service trays to include required service items, for delivery to rooms. Delivers and retrieves food for proper family-style dining service to each classroom, to include any special dietary requirements.
  • Ensures kitchens are adequately stocked and equipped with the necessary food and equipment. Informs supervisor if ingredients for menu items are not available to allow adequate time for items to be procured for use.
  • Prepares baby formula, in compliance with USDA food requirements for children ages 6 weeks to 11 months. Ensures correct proportions, ad governed by the USDA food programs, are provided at the center(s) on a daily basis. Receives and inventory food deliveries. Ensures that all food is of top quality and freshness before receiving and/or preparation.
  • In the absence of the Cook, may perform a variety of cooking tasks with direct supervision and direction. Follows posted USDA approved menus. If changes are necessary, notifies supervisor prior to making the change. Follows standardized recipes in preparing meals for the children.
  • Ensures compliance with standards as set by the USDA Food Program, base Public Health, Safety and meets all DoD standards for Food Health & Safety.
Physical Effort:
  • Continual standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending.
  • Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lifts or moves objects weighing over 40 pounds with assistance.
Working Conditions:
  • The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity.
  • The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped.
  • Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes with refrigeration or freezing units.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Qualifying Experience:
  • Must have experience in and knowledge of methods and procedures relating to food preparation, portioning and presentation gained in a grill, snack bar, restaurant, club or similar food activity. Skill in organizing work assignments in order to meet strict meal schedules.
  • Must be able to read and understand menu cards and special dietary requirements. Experience in general sanitation principles to properly store food to safeguard against spoilage and waste.
  • Must be able to read-speak and write English. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, work safely, and do simple arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of operating and cleaning food service equipment, characteristics of various foods, and the ability to season food and decide when foods are done is required.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution in order to qualify.

Additional information

  • Child Development Program will provide 100% childcare fee discount for all CYP staff for the first child enrolled in a full-time or regular part-time DAF CDP. A 37% discount will apply for each subsequent child. CYP Staff must spend a minimum of 75% of their work schedule in the classroom and flex employees who average 15 hours a week. Please contact local NAF HR Office for additional information.
