Duties

Help

Plans, develops, reviews, refines, coordinates, and instructs graduate level medical education in a complex Master degree curriculum.

Plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates learning practical exercises and labs.

Serves as an academic counselor and mentor for student research projects.

Performs Associate Professor Functions and maintains AF PA professional leadership.

  • A minimum of six (6) years (preferably ten years) of clinical work experience as a NCCPA certified PA within the Military Healthcare System (MHS)
  • Depending on the type of position (competitive/excepted) you are selected for, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period.
  • Upon completion of your probationary/trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
  • Prefer three (3) years of experience in a graduate-level, military medical training program. Prefer familiarity and proficiency in the principles of Physician Assistant education
  • Maintain medical life support certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Prefer to also maintain certification in Pediatric Life Support (PALS)
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft
  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use
  • Incumbent is considered critical to IPAP operations and may be subject to unit recall procedures as needed for incident response or exercise support

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, GS-0603 series +IOR.

BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Graduation from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant(external link) (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Successful completion of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants(external link) (NCCPA) examination; must maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for Continuing Medical Education(external link) (CME) and re-certification.

Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician Assistant from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

A minimum of one full year of work experience as a certified physician assistant equivalent to the next lower grade level and completion of an accredited physician assistant educational program is required.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-11, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes counseling and managing students in a rigorous graduate level program; laboratory and radiologic testing for emergent, acute, and chronic medical and surgical conditions; using simulation technology such as patient scenarios, simulators, and mannequins; demonstrating advanced surgical and trauma care techniques during live tissue labs. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Expert professional knowledge, skills, and abilities as a medical educator and AF PA (42G) career advisor. Knowledgeable with faculty and leadership positions at a large graduate school encompassing multiple faculty, subjects, and support sections. Expert personal communication skills are essential.

2. Experience as a certified PA with not less than six (preferably ten) years of clinical practice and with extensive professional knowledge skills, and abilities as a NCCPA certified PA in the delivery of medical and trauma care techniques utilized in the administration and management of medical and surgical patients.

3. Three years of prior experience in PA education is preferred, but not mandatory. Extensive knowledge, skills, and experience with an academic position at a graduate school (minimum requirements are NCCPA certification and Master Degree).

4. Extensive professional knowledge and skill performing minor surgical and resuscitation procedures. Extensive expertise in clinical medicine and human anatomy and physiology.

5. Extensive professional knowledge and experience in counseling and managing students in a rigorous military training program for Physician Assistants. Extensive ability to professionally communicate both orally and in writing. Ability to deal with diverse populations and other military services is necessary.

6. Knowledge, skills and experience with adult education and application of multiple instructional techniques to facilitate various learning styles. Ability to instruct training courses in both classroom seminar and hands-on lab settings.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
